Big Wave Dave's
About
Casual Eats on Kauai’s East Side
When you find yourself cruising through Kapaa, Big Wave Dave's offers that quintessential laid-back island atmosphere where the primary goal is simple: good food without the fuss. It is the type of spot that feels like a neighborhood backyard hangout, characterized by the smell of char-grilled proteins and the distant sound of ocean breezes hitting the coconut palms.
Authentic Island Comfort
The menu focuses on classic local favorites, featuring generous portions that satisfy after a morning session of surfing or hiking. You will find staples like savory plate lunches and fresh local catches prepared with a straightforward approach. It is an ideal stop for families or solo travelers looking for a quick, filling meal before heading back out to explore the Garden Isle. The kitchen keeps it honest, relying on traditional preparation methods that highlight the flavor profile of the region.
A Local Perspective
Part of the charm here is the unpretentious nature of the space. While the seating area is modest and can get a bit buzzy during the lunch rush, that energy is exactly what makes it a Kapaa staple. Parking in this part of town can occasionally require a bit of patience, but the quick turnover of tables means you are rarely waiting long for a spot to sit and enjoy your meal. If you are craving a no-nonsense experience that captures the humble spirit of Kauai, this is the place to refuel.

I could not believe the disrespect and hostility i was treated with at this place. I went to watch the basketball game. I sat at a table and ordered a beer. (On a Wednesday afternoon, there were about 6 people in a place that holds 60.) I finished my beer and paid for it. I chatted with some people at the bar, one of whom was the owner Dave, he was super nice. Also some regulars, and the bartender Keala. I went outside to help my wife carry bags from the farmers market to the car, and went back to my table. The bartender came over and asked if i want another beer, i said no. Then she said, i have to order another beer or leave. And she starts insulting me, saying this isnt college, i have to "move on out". So i left. This is the only time I have ever been insulted in a bar. I have friends in the service industry, i know they sometimes have to deal with rowdy drunks, so i chat and smile and leave a nice tip. To be treated this way, in a nearly empty bar when i wasnt taking anyone's chair, the bartender had to leave the bar and cross the entire place just to insult me. I go to bars to have a drink and a nice time and relax, not to get harassed and insulted by the bartender. I will never go back to this place, sorry Dave.

This place is great! Reasonable prices we actually came back 2 days in a row and we got the Ahi poke nachos both times! Everybody was super friendly and we were well served. Will definitely come back again if we're ever back on the island.

We just stopped in for drinks and to watch the game. Great local hangout and best drink prices I have seen on the Island. The bartender was great! Very friendly and attentive.

Straight-forward beach town bar and grill with great food and drinks. The service was excellent. The bartender was also the server. She was so welcoming and friendly and great about checking on us, even though she had a steady crowd at the bar. Be sure to stop in when you want a quick drink or bite!

This place was so cool. The bartender made my day. Watched Monday night football. Great drink specials. You can have 10 people there and look busy. I will be back to see my bartenders.

This is a very cool little place. Lots of local history. Great food! Great staff. They surve food on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (we showed up Wednesday afternoon, but came back Thursday to try the food. We had the mushroom bombers (must try!) The shaggy roll (got to meet shaggy!) And the fish and chips (wahoo fish, Ono) Everything was delicious! The staff and the other patrons were very friendly. It's definitely worth stopping in when you are in Kapa'a. They also have karaoke, live music and dancing some nights! We define will be going back! Do yourself a favor and check it out!

I popped in for a happy hour drink. Great deal on well drinks! Made from scratch Margarita was outstanding - I watched the bartender squeeze the citrus. No beer taps, bottles only. A few local regulars at the bar, and I felt welcome to sit. Didn’t get a sense for if there was food, but after about an hour I could hear that the kitchen was going. I ordered the Furukaki Fries, with the sauce on the fries, and they were amazing! I also had perfect fried oysters, and the cocktail sauce they came with was delicious. They played the Merrie Monarch festival on the tv. I love that they supported the hula participants in this ways. Restrooms were clean.
