About
A Sip of Tradition in East Kauai
Stepping into Awa Hale, you are immediately met with the earthy, grounding aroma of fresh kava root. Tucked away in the heart of Kapaa, this space serves as a calm antithesis to the bustling tourist hubs along the Coconut Coast. The interior is refreshingly minimalist, favoring open airflow and community seating over heavy decor, making it the ideal spot for travelers looking to slow down after a long hike up Sleeping Giant.
The Kava Experience
Awa Hale specializes in authentic, traditionally prepared ‘awa. You won’t find sugary mixers or diluted concoctions here; the focus is on the raw, potent potency of the plant. Locals often gather here in the early evening, creating a quiet, low-frequency hum of conversation that feels distinctly Hawaiian. Watching the staff strain the root through traditional cloth is part of the ritual—a visual reminder of the deep cultural roots this drink holds in Polynesia.
What to Expect
If you are new to kava, start slow. The flavor is unapologetically vegetal and bitter, often followed by a mild numbing sensation on the tongue that signals the drink is doing its work. It is an acquired taste, and the communal benches invite you to sit for a while as the stress of the day dissolves. Be aware that the space can get quite busy during the sunset hours, so finding a seat might require a bit of patience. Whether you are a kava veteran or a curious visitor, this Kapaa gem offers an genuine look into a cultural practice that has sustained islanders for generations.

The guy who runs this place is very kind and smart. The kava was the best I've ever had. He will talk endlessly about what he does and it's obvious it's because he loves it.

My wife and I were vacationing in Kauai for 2 weeks and our first encounter was on our 7th night for an open Mic music night. We had so a fun and wonderful time. My wife and I loved the IV Therapy exotic fresh brewed tea. My wife also thoroughly enjoyed the performers and then it was our turn and we had amazing experiences. Aloha and Mahalo too

The whole atmosphere is exactly what you hope for when you walk into a place like this. The music, the techno vibe, the free-spirited energy, people just being themselves and a little more in touch with the universe. Between the kava, the kratom, the conversations, and the people you meet, it creates this space where you can just settle in and connect — with yourself, with others, with whatever larger energy you believe in. If you’re looking for an evening that feels a little more open, a little more alive, this is the right place to go.

This is a great spot. Very creative, natural drink menu. I love that there's no alcohol and everything is plant based, mostly locally grown. The live music has been fun. This is a great business to support.

Live music frequently. Chill vibes. Regulars are all great folks. Traditional kava plus variations and other health drinks. I recommend stopping by for a shell or three🙂

I visited this 2-week old juice cafe / kava bar on my first trip to magical Kauai. 💫 It’s a really cool space with good people, delicious drinks, plant medicines, and hand carved works of art. And it looks like they have frequent events, mocktail hours, etc. It’s as much a cafe as a sort of plant medicine drink apothecary - I recommend chatting with the staff to determine what’s going to serve you best based on your body’s needs that day. There are so many options on the drink menus! I don’t even know where to start. I had 3 drinks throughout my trip, and bought some dried Kava, dried Kratom, and local honey. I didn’t have the opportunity to eat there but the menu looks fantastic! They offer a healing broth that would be perfect if you’re feeling a bit rumpish from the demands of travel. I will have to try the Luau Stew and Green Papaya Salad next time. Such nourishing ingredients! I highly recommend for healthy, nourishing, medicinal food and drinks! And good vibes. 💓☺️
