L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Kaneohe (Kaneohe Bay Dr)
About
A Kaneohe Tradition for Plate Lunch Lovers
When you find yourself cruising along Kaneohe Bay Drive, the craving for a heavy, satisfying plate lunch is almost inevitable. This local spot serves as the quintessential stop for those who value function over frills. It is the kind of place where the scent of teriyaki-glazed meats hitting the grill greets you at the door, signaling that a no-nonsense meal is minutes away.
Island Favorites Done Right
The menu remains anchored in the classics that put this franchise on the map. The Chicken Katsu is a reliable go-to, featuring a crispy, golden-brown panko crust that shatters on impact, revealing tender meat beneath. Pair it with their signature macaroni salad—a chilled, creamy staple that offers the perfect textural contrast to the piping hot proteins. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch break or refueling after a morning at the nearby sandbar, the portions here are engineered to satisfy the hungriest of appetites.
The Local Experience
Stepping inside, you get the authentic, fast-casual Hawaii vibe. The setup is straightforward: order at the counter, wait for your number to be called, and grab your heavy styrofoam or paper containers to go. It is a bustling environment, especially during the midday rush, so be prepared for a bit of a wait if you arrive right at noon. Parking in the Kaneohe Bay shopping center can be a bit of a game of musical chairs during peak hours, but the tradeoff for a hot, reliable Loco Moco topped with a perfectly fried egg is well worth the effort. It is the ultimate comfort food destination for residents of the Windward side who need a quick, filling, and familiar taste of home.

Went to buy shoes, realized they were in the next lot over. Walked an bought 300 pair of shoes in about 15 min. The guy out front was laughing when we walke back to leave. Our car was gone. When we went to ask him he ran to the back room of L&L Hawaiin Barbecue. They know they are running a scam. Their lot was maybe 60% capacity. Some spots are clearly marked for certain stores only like the gym. But they have some signs sporadically throughout the lot. But none where I parked. I didn't even see the sign until I saw the older guy grinning and laughing. We parked where my two sons are standing. They have someone tow the car to Honolulu to take more money..... pretty sure to give this guy a kick back. It is super shady business. Talk about a black eye on Hawaii and the beautiful town of Kailua. I would recommend letting the business here all go without any customers and the owner of the building has to sell to someone with a bit of integrity. 9 years of visiting. I am always careful where I park. Every lot (except this one) is clearly marked. Depending on how my transaction goes at the company they had tow it, maybe check for my review there too. Let's put bad business out of business and support community businesses that aren't shady, sneaky and crooks. Imo and two ladies that had had the same thing happen in that lot within the past year telling me their illegal experience with the tow company (demanding only cash and making them use the ATM on site)(one was the lady in the white car next to us) if that happens to me, you will be able to watch the recording ....as it is illegal.

The food was really tasty and felt healthy. Prices are about the same as fast food chains, but here you get fresh and nutritious meals instead. A great option if you want something more wholesome without paying extra.

I've had my doubts about Hawaiian plate lunch, but no more. Every last thing was amazing. Teriyaki beef, fried shrimp, orange chicken, garlic chicken, mac salad... all so so good. The garlic chicken is heaven for true garlic lovers and I've never liked any mac salad I've had on island until this one. Would recommend the mini plate unless you are HUNGRY or want leftovers, portions are generous to say the least. I'll be working my way through the menu for the next few months, please call a doctor.
