Koolau Drive Inn
About
A Kaneohe Culinary Landmark
For those cruising through the windward side of Oahu, Koolau Drive Inn remains a staple of Kaneohe’s local food scene. Far from the polished tourist traps of Waikiki, this spot leans into its roots as a no-frills destination for authentic island-style comfort food. The air inside is thick with the savory scent of grilled meats and the steady hum of regulars chatting over lunch plates.
The Flavor of Windward Oahu
The menu is a celebration of Hawaiian plate lunch culture. Their fried chicken is legendary among locals, featuring a crisp, golden batter that holds its own against the humid coastal air. Whether you are grabbing a quick box lunch before heading to the nearby botanical gardens or settling in for a hearty dinner, the portions are designed to fuel you for the day. Be prepared: the seating area is modest and can get a bit noisy during the lunch rush, but that is part of the charm of a true neighborhood drive-inn.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
This is where you go when you want consistency. It is ideal for families or solo travelers looking to avoid the pretension of fusion dining. While you might have to navigate a busy parking lot during peak hours, the reward is a classic, honest meal that hits the spot every single time. It is a genuine slice of Kaneohe history that favors substance over style, proving that the best food in the islands is often found in the most unassuming corners.

I ordered the Chicken katsu, “regular” portion. I put regular in quotes, because I would rather call it large, but its price is still pretty low which is awesome. The food itself was incredibly delicious and the service was perfect too: the guy was very nice, we got our food (4 people) pretty fast and the restaurant was cozy as well. My family ordered different dishes than me and they loved theirs too. We liked the place so much we returned the next day, I ordered the same thing - though a mini portion this time, because even that was a bit too big for my lunch😁. I didn't want to eat another poke so after a long day walking at the Japanese Garden I looked on Google and found this restaurant. This place is just minutes from the garden and cemetery. When we got there was empty so I was a little worried but I am glad we stopped by cause MAN... it was delicious and the service was also great. Just before we were leaving more people started to come, I was happy to see the place full cause they deserved it. If you looking for a reasonably priced Hawaiian food restaurant, this is your place. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and hubby the shrimp with kalbi and they both were amazing, 10/10.
