Willie's Hot Chicken
About
A Nashville Kick in the Heart of Kona
When you crave something with a serious punch, Willie's Hot Chicken brings an authentic Nashville-style fried chicken experience to the Big Island. Located right in the heart of Kailua-Kona, this spot has become a go-to for locals looking to trade the traditional poke bowl for a crispy, spice-laden indulgence. The kitchen focuses on simplicity: perfectly golden, buttermilk-brined chicken that manages to stay juicy beneath a craggy, seasoned exterior.
Spice Levels and Sensory Details
The menu relies on a tiered heat system. Whether you are playing it safe with a mild seasoning or pushing your limits with their signature 'extra hot' rub, the scent of cayenne and smoked paprika greets you the moment you step up to the window. You’ll hear the consistent rhythmic clatter of the fryers and the upbeat island-meets-southern music playing in the background. It is loud, it is fast, and it is undeniably satisfying.
The Island Experience
Don't expect a formal dining affair here. This is classic, grab-and-go comfort food designed for those hot afternoons when you need a quick caloric boost before heading back to the beach. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you are visiting during the peak lunch rush—parking in this part of Kailua-Kona can get tight, and the communal seating areas fill up quickly with residents and travelers alike. Grab a side of house-made slaw to cool the palate and find a patch of shade to enjoy your meal. It is arguably the crunchiest, spiciest chicken you will find along the Kona coast.

The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Got the Sweet Hawaiian Heat with Fireball maple dipping sauce and loved it. Just the right amount of spice and heat. Baked bean side and macaroni and cheese sides were delicious. The cheese balls were really tasty, too. Sat on the outside in their covered patio. They have a full bar as well as a great assortment of sodas. We will be back!

Chicken tastes fresh and has a good crisp. Mac & cheese is a good side. Beware that the heat levels are actually quite mild. I got the Nashville Hot expecting some heat and I would classify it as mild. I would say I have a moderate spice pallette to. Adjust your levels accordingly.

The flavors and quality of food were amazing! I love the choices and how it was presented. The availability of alcohol and sitting outside etc was great. The atmosphere was fun though clearly seemed to be designed around mainland culture and style of restaurants and social spaces. That doesn’t detract from how great it is, just a fact of what it is when you’re choosing your location. A mainland experience in Hawaii.

Solid chicken sandwich and chicken tenders. If you are a fan of spice but not too much, nashville hot is a good choice. If you are looking for classic fried chicken, southern is your sauce! The sweet potato fries didn't have any salt but the tater tots were too salty. Waffle fries were a good in between. Lota of beer on tap. Seating is indoor or outdoor. They also have a good selection of hats! The atmosphere in here was clean and the signs added a lot of character.

Really enjoyed the Waffle Fries for sure as other had mentioned in other posts. The Chicken had a decent amount of flavor rub & would consider this as part of the "Top 10" Hot Chicken tour. Location - Location - Location is where I'm at with Willie's. Everything from the design and music choice.. Very welcoming! ... Oh! Maybe it's because I'm also on the Big Island too.

Exceptional chicken tenders, the sweet Hawaiian spiciness is perfect! Loved the sides, especially potato salad. Currently reviewing my travel notes, and Willie‘s Hot Chicken is mentioned twice. Thanks for the great food!

Bar set up style; Staff is super friendly and the ambiance is both entertaining and inviting. (Plus immaculate private access to restrooms!) Breading on Chicken was reminicent of fish and chips (very light breading on high quality chicken) which simply means that the dry rubs dont stick as well, lowering your flavor exposure. Got the Nashville, (considered to be thier mid-to higher heat) and while the flavor was a delight, my tolerance level would put this at a low heat index (San Diego Daves Hot Chicken: mild for possible point of reference). The cost is about what you'd expect in Kona ($30 for one split order w/ an additional side and one drink). Side of potato salad was solid, I definitely needed to add my own salt and pepper to bring out the flavors a bit more.

This place is clean with great service. We were there during the main dinner hour and they were getting people in and out. Chicken was delicious. They need to update the scale of how hot you want your chicken. I ordered middle of the road for hotness and it had no heat to it. Chicken was still good quality and a great atmosphere. I would go back.

If you’re in the mood for some fried chicken among the Hawaiian palm trees, this is the place to check out. We sat outside and listened to some live music among the cool breeze. Good place to chill after a long day of sightseeing. Check it out!

This was a nice find. We already had eaten a couple of times at Kona brewpub (great place!) this trip so thought we would give Willie’s a try. We both had the tenders (one with tots and the other with Mac & cheese). They were out quickly and were tasty. We got ‘Nashville hot’ which was flavorful, but we might step up a heat level next time. Employees were very friendly - thanks for a great visit!
