Island Lava Java (75-5801 Ali'i Drive Building 1 Building A1)
About
Coffee-Fueled Mornings on Ali'i Drive
Perched right above the crashing surf in the heart of Kailua-Kona, Island Lava Java is the go-to spot for those who want their breakfast with a view. The air here smells faintly of sea salt and freshly ground 100% Kona coffee, a staple for locals and visitors alike. It is common to see patrons squinting slightly against the bright morning sun reflecting off the Pacific, clutching mugs of their signature estate-grown brew.
The Lava Java Culinary Style
The kitchen leans into the bounty of the Big Island. Their menu is anchored by the famous Kahlua pork eggs benedict and macadamia nut pancakes that disappear as quickly as they arrive. If you find yourself here for lunch, the fresh-caught fish tacos are a reliable choice. The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious; don't be surprised if the sound of your own conversation is briefly overtaken by the roar of the waves hitting the rocks just feet away.
A Local Kona Landmark
Operating as a cornerstone of the Ali'i Drive dining scene, this spot has a bustling energy that mirrors the waves outside. It isn't a place for hushed, formal dining; it is loud, vibrant, and always humming with activity. One minor quirk to keep in mind is the parking situation, which can be a puzzle in this part of town, so give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate the nearby lots. Whether you are fueling up for a day of snorkeling or winding down as the sun dips into the horizon, the open-air seating makes it feel like you are dining on the very edge of Hawaii.

A Kona Gem with a View to Match! If you’re looking for the perfect breakfast spot in Kailua-Kona, Island Lava Java is an absolute must-visit. We had an incredible morning here, and I can’t recommend it enough. First off, the view is breathtaking. There’s nothing quite like sipping a drink while looking out over the ocean—it sets the perfect "aloha" vibe for the rest of the day. Our server, Tomu, was fantastic. She was incredibly attentive and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. It’s that kind of friendly, proactive service that really elevates a meal. The Food & Drink The menu has something for everyone, whether you want to indulge or keep it classic: Pineapple Upside Down French Toast: My friend ordered this and said it was amazing. If you have a sweet tooth, this is clearly the winner. I went with a simpler breakfast, and it was executed perfectly. The Portuguese sausage added that local flavor I was looking for. Ginger Tea: Do not sleep on the tea! It was incredibly refreshing and the perfect palate cleanser for a warm morning. Between the delicious food, the stellar service from Tomu, and that iconic Kona coastline, we will definitely be back!

Beautiful view, but food was probably a relative lowlight during our Kona stay. Still pretty good, but the fish tacos were dry and the shrimp lacking sweetness. Nice sauces though! We came just before closing, so it may not have been their best stock

What a great spot with an amazing view! We spent a few hours there in the morning and it was consistently busy and lively. The bartender Riley took great care of us! We were there for Thirsty Thursday which is "all day happy hour". We had the waffle egg combo with potatoes on the side and the sausage - super tasty! (It was so good, I forgot to get a pic of the meal)

Excellent breakfast. Great view of the ocean, fast service and lots of options for breakfast including veggie and vegan options. The fruit cup was super fresh. Excellent coffee and they have nondairy milk options.

Island Lava Java has been our favorite place to eat in Kona. We’ve come here most days during our visit and have had both breakfast and lunch here. They have an ample coffee bar with matcha and chai options. I had a matcha latte with ube cold foam, life changing. For breakfast we had the luau scramble with Portuguese sausage and potatoes (pictured). It was extremely delicious and the portions are generous. For lunch we had the fresh fish sandwich. It was so good we’ve have it multiple times, once with a white fish and the other with the ahi tuna. Both were great but the ahi tuna was my favorite. All ingredients were super fresh and so tasty. The staff have been incredibly kind. The view from the restaurant really can’t be beat. We saw a pod of dolphins the whole time we were there for breakfast. Great spot, go to it!

We went for both dinner and breakfast on our trip to the Big Island and as far as restaurants go this was our highlight. The atmosphere, being right by the ocean on Ali'i drive, was superb. We spent dinner looking out at the setting sun and breakfast looking out at the morning boaters. Service was excellent. They kept coming back to check on us, and were able to provide suggestions based on my wife's questions. I thoroughly enjoyed the coconut shrimp for dinner, but the real highlight for me was the island style pancakes. They were soft and fluffy and smothered in tons of mac nuts, bananas and coconut syrup. Highly recommend the pancakes island style if you're going to go for breakfast.

We went to check out a place that was recommended by our Wasabi tour guide Felix and we were not disappointed! Food was great, portions were huge and service was very good! We wanted to try cocktails and they were well made - exactly as they should be! Bloody Mary was spicy, perfect for brunch! Hana Hou was on the sweeter, more refreshing side (could be dangerous). Burger was tasty and fries were pretty crispy and well seasoned. Island benedict is a must for the start of a good day! And we got an amazing upside down pineapple French toast as a dessert. Definitely worth checking out!

Had a 💯 experience! Service was absolutely wonderful, friendly, prompt, real ohana vibes. Staff treated each other and guests kindly. Our server was super down to earth and kind and the food was delicious. I got fish tacos, the portions are great even the kids meals were quality and good portions, sat outside with a perfect view of the ocean. Id come here everytime I am in Kona. Fair prices on food. I had a local IPA, delicious too.
