About
From Cacao Pod to Premium Bar
Tucked away on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano, The Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory offers a rare glimpse into the craft of single-origin chocolate production. Unlike industrial operations, this Kona-based facility manages the entire process on-site. Visitors can walk through the orchards to see the vibrant, football-shaped cacao pods ripening on the trees before heading inside to catch the scent of roasting beans that fills the air.
An Authentic Kona Experience
The operation is a family-run endeavor that helped pioneer the commercial cacao industry in Hawaii. Because the pods are harvested, fermented, and sun-dried directly on the estate, the resulting chocolate maintains a unique flavor profile often described as having hints of tropical fruit. The atmosphere is unpretentious and educational—expect to learn the technical nuances of conching and tempering while standing on the actual factory floor.
Practical Details for Your Visit
If you plan to visit, keep in mind that the winding roads leading up the mountain require careful driving and a bit of patience. The space is intimate, so walking tours are often kept small, which allows for genuine interaction with the staff. Whether you are a dedicated chocoholic or just someone looking for a quiet morning activity away from the crowded beaches of West Hawaii, this is a distinct way to taste the island's agricultural legacy. Don't leave without sampling the 70% dark chocolate; it provides a bold, clean snap that proves why local Hawaiian cacao has gained international recognition.

Super informative tour! We got to sample three kinds of chocolate and follow the steps of turning cacao seeds into chocolate step by step. The owner gives the tours and explains how he and his family came from North Carolina and went theough all the steps of turning the cacao farm into the first chocolate factory in Hawaii. Fernando is his assistant and explains the machines in the processing facility. Our group of four learned so much and as a group that has farms of our own, appreciated the entrepreneurial spirit required to make this business work!

We experienced a tour of the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory in May and we can't say enough positive things about the experience. Firstly, what a beautiful and peaceful location! Owner and tour guide Bob was absolutely fantastic!! Incredibly knowledgeable and gracious. We got to try the different types of chocolate they make, all really delicious, but our favourite was Criollo. Assistant Fernando was also great and treated us to freshly cracked macadamia nuts as we arrived! One of the best tours we've ever taken in Hawaii. Highly recommended!!

We stopped here on a whim and wow am I glad we did! They were so kind and lovely here! The criollo chocolate has a flavor unlike any other. I have found my chocolate spirit partner! Go visit, grab a sample and buy some chocolate! If you want to see the chocolate making demo, it's only on certain days - so make sure to check on the days of the week if that is your intention!

Had such a great experience! We learned so much about the process of cacao to chocolate and got to try a cacao bean, nibs, some fudge to dip them in, and even the rarest chocolate in the world, Criollo!! We had to buy some to bring home for family to try. The lady in the store was super sweet and friendly and the man who gave our tour had a good sense of humor and answered all our questions.
