A Legacy of Home-Style Cooking

Stepping into Teshima Restaurant feels like entering a time capsule of Kona’s agricultural history. Established by Asayo and Zenichi Teshima in the late 1920s, this Honalo landmark has evolved from a small coffee house serving laborers into a cornerstone of Big Island dining. The walls, decorated with nostalgic photos and local memorabilia, tell the story of a family that helped define the flavor profile of West Hawaii.

The Flavor of Tradition

You come here for the Teishoku sets—complete, balanced meals that capture the essence of Japanese home cooking. The miso butterfish is the undisputed star, flaking apart with the gentle touch of a chopstick, offering a perfect balance of savory fermentation and rich, buttery sweetness. Pair that with their house-made tsukemono and a steaming bowl of rice to understand why locals have been loyal to this kitchen for generations.

The Kona Dining Experience

The atmosphere is unpretentious and authentically local. You will likely hear the clatter of ceramic bowls and the hum of conversations from long-time residents. It is the kind of place where you don’t dress up; you just show up hungry. Be prepared for a tight parking situation—the lot fills up fast during lunch hours—but the effort is rewarded by the genuine warmth of the service. If you are exploring the slopes above Kailua-Kona, this is a essential stop for anyone craving a meal that feels less like a restaurant visit and more like a Sunday dinner at a friend's house.

This place is a class act. The steak was delicious. Id probably skip the tempura next time. Kids loved their teriyaki beef and chicken. We all had a great time. Putting flowers in my daughters hair was a nice touch. The service was very diligent and polite. All around winner.

This is the kind of authentic, honest to goodness, rich cultural experience you only come across once in a great while, and you hope you didn't tread to hard or make too much noise because this is a truly special place. We spotted Teshima's from the road and there was just something about it we couldn't put our finger on. That "something about it" turned out to be a place with a deeply important place in the community, long run by an amazing proprietress well into her mid-100's, and still treated with that level of care today. We enjoyed the traditional cuisine and felt right at home, no matter how much of a stranger we were.

Wow, great service and food! This is easily my favorite place on the island, from the historic atmosphere to the incredibly friendly staff. Between the four of us, we tried a little of everything. If you prefer to keep it simple, go with the chicken teriyaki—it's probably the best I’ve ever had at a restaurant. If you want a variety, go with the trio. While the pickled cucumbers were tasty and the sashimi was incredibly fresh, the real star of the show was the shrimp tempura. We also tried a bowl of glass noodles with a very tasty sauce, Definitely do not skip the shrimp tempura!

What a gem in Kealakekua! A rustic, clean, simple restaurant with fantastic Japanese cuisine that goes beyond sushi and sashimi. Service is A+ - friendly, prompt and full of Aloha. Customers were a good mix of both residents and visitors. You will not be disappointed!

A must stop if you’re on the island. Historic Japanese restaurant with great tempura. Enjoyed by locals as well as tourists. There’s a one way entrance and exit through the restaurant, kinda fun.

This restaurant is incredible! First of all, so much history and a great vibe. We knew it had to be good when we saw a line out the door. Even though it was a long line, we didn’t wait that long and it was 100% worth the wait. The service was fantastic. They served us hot green tea with our meals which was delicious. I got the teishoku and every part of the meal was incredible.
