Mastering the Art of Charcoal-Grilled Skewers in Kailua-Kona
When you find yourself craving a late-night bite in the heart of Kailua-Kona, Tenka Tori stands out as a departure from the typical island fare. This intimate spot specializes in authentic Japanese yakitori, where the primary focus is the precise application of binchotan charcoal to chicken skewers, vegetables, and savory bites.
A Smoke-Filled Culinary Ritual
Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is the rhythmic hum of the exhaust fans working against a steady stream of fragrant, hardwood smoke. The smell is intoxicating—a mixture of caramelized soy-based glaze, charred chicken skin, and the faint, clean scent of white charcoal. The seating is modest, prioritizing the relationship between the diner and the grill master. It is the kind of place that feels best suited for a solitary traveler looking to unwind or a close pair of friends who prefer a quiet, low-lit corner over the bustling tourist strips.
Refined Simplicity on the Big Island
The menu leans heavily into traditional Japanese izakaya sensibilities. While the chicken skewers—ranging from succulent thighs to crispy cartilage—are the main event, the vegetable selections provide a necessary crunch. Don’t be surprised if you have to navigate a bit of a wait; the kitchen operates at its own pace, prioritizing the integrity of the char over speed. The space itself is tight, which adds to the communal, authentic feeling of a neighborhood haunt. Whether you are a local resident finishing a shift or a visitor wanting a break from heavy luau buffets, this sliver of Japan in the middle of Kailua-Kona offers a grounded, flavorful experience that leans into the craft of slow-grilled perfection.

Place went downhill from the last time i ate there (probably over a year) last minute decision turned out bad. Service slow 20 mins mind you and the place was basically empty! Karaage chicken bento had mostly rice which made the plate very heavy thinking it was a nice size plate NOT!!!!. 4 very large round pieces of chicken so big that the inside dont cook good. Due to closed plate the crispy outside came soggy. All together bad experience! Live and learn!

It is truly a hole in the wall food court restaurant that serves the most amazing Japanese style fried chicken thighs to die for!!!!! We had 3 adults and ordered the 2 1/2 pound chicken thighs, pickled vegetables, and rice, and it was…… literal perfection!!!! The exact amount for a great meal (though we may have fought over the last 2 thighs). I was raised in the south and we know fried chicken, but this place knows it better. Don’t miss out on the best fried chicken you could possibly ever have ❤️❤️❤️ (sorry no photos because we ate it too fast)

Best fried chicken I've had in a long time! Despite the size of the chicken pieces they are well cooked through. The sauces are bomb and really add a dimension to the flavor. Would come again to Hilo just for this

Unexpectedly stopped here for lunch. Did not even know of Tenkatori's existence until today, but am glad to have stumbled across this hidden gem by chance. This was probably the tastiest, juiciest chicken I've had in a while. I ate it fresh and it was delicious, and even after two hours of it sitting in my car it was still delicious. My girlfriend bit into a piece and it literally shot juice across the center console and to the passenger seat. I cannot emphasize the juiciness enough.

This gem of a restaurant is located in a small food court. I got the curry and chicken combo and it was delicious. I usually don't like curry but I have been urged to try Japanese curry and this was a game changer for me. Pours the curry over the rice and had the chicken and salads on the side. The chicken was juicy fried fresh and perfectly. You get to choose a sauce and I went with the wasabi mayo for the burn. Counter service was fast and courteous. Again don't forget to try the curry.

Popped in here after a day at the beach. Basically looked for affordable highly rated take out places. This place sounded great, and it delivered. Service was great, menu options were excellent but not overwhelming. It's clear they know their lane and stick to it. Food was cooked fresh for us and was divine. Loved the chicken - so tender! And the wasabi-mayo was amazing. Serving sizes were generous.

Karaage chicken came out very hot and good. Sweet spicy sauce was very good as was the green salad. public tables available to dine on site.

Without a doubt, this was the best meal—and the finest fried chicken—I had during my entire trip to Hawaii. The owners are the most incredibly friendly and genuinely kind people. Their warmth truly elevates the whole dining experience. I would strongly urge everyone visiting the Big Island to make a point of trying this place; you won't regret it!

Super authentic Japanese style fried chicken. The boneless thighs have light crispy skins and juicy meats inside. The restaurant owner/staff is very friendly and genuinely tried making a connection to every customer.

This gem is tucked into the food court of the Kona International Market Place. The owners lived in Japan for 10+ years together and moved to Kona, shortly thereafter opening this awesome chicken place. It’s all Gluten-Free!!! The chicken is fried to perfection, crispy and juicy all at once. I don’t know why it took me so long to go here because I can see it becoming a regular place for me. I ordered the Karaage mix plate with the potato mac salad. To my surprise and delight, the potato mac salad had little chunks of Pineapple which added a touch of acid and sweetness; so inventive! Simple menu, not too many options, and everything we enjoyed was delicious. 10/10. I will be going back!
