Taka Sushi
About
A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Kailua-Kona
Tucked away from the main bustle of Ali'i Drive, Taka Sushi serves as a quiet refuge for those seeking precision-cut nigiri and authentic Japanese flavors on the Big Island. The space is intimate, stripped back, and refreshingly devoid of the typical tourist-trap flair, focusing entirely on the craft of the sushi chef.
Savoring the Catch of the Day
The menu highlights the freshness of local Pacific waters, often featuring ahi caught just off the Kona coast. Regulars know to look for the daily specials chalkboard; the hamachi and melt-in-your-mouth fatty tuna are standouts that reflect a commitment to quality over quantity. The rice is seasoned with a subtle hand, ensuring the natural sweetness of the seafood remains the primary focus of every bite.
What to Expect
Stepping inside, you are greeted by the clean, sharp scent of vinegared rice and the quiet hum of a professional kitchen. It is a minimalist environment designed for serious diners who appreciate a focus on technique. Be prepared for a space that values efficiency; seating is limited and the room can get quite lively during peak dinner hours, so it is best suited for couples or small groups who prefer conversation over elaborate decor. Parking near the shopping complex can be a bit of a challenge during the sunset rush, but the trade-off is a high-caliber sushi experience that holds its own against any mainland counterpart.

Delicious sushi with so many options! Great service and quality, reasonably priced for the island.

It is tucked away from the street, you have to wade through shops facing the street to get there. We were at the ice shaving store next door and were looking online for eateries around and decided to walk over out of curiosity. Ended up taking a vegetarian fried rice which was nice - nothing complicated but it had flavor and enough veggies to make it very palatable. Server was busy but answered our questions and was clear in setting expectations around the wait time. Seating is fairly ordinary - we did take out and hence that didn’t matter.

Delicious! The food here was great. Server was friendly and helpful. Food was brought out quickly. We were with 2 gluten free friends, they had gluten free soy sauce and food options.

This is the only place open after 10pm for miles and it was packed. indoor seating only- 2 AC units inside but i think it was broken(it was warm inside) Our food took a while to come out but it was hot and tasty. Our server was very friendly. I really liked the oxtail- rice is ordered separate, get the large to share!

Amazing! I got take out but the food is amazingggg, I highly recommend the Grilled Salmon, amy of their soups or their sushi. Very delicious, next time I will dine in. Directions are a little wonky, find somewhere near by to park & walk past the ocean & between some shops & you'll find it (:

We absolutely love sushi and were excited to try it! We know it was delivery but remained optimistic. We got: Shaggy Dog Roll Moonlight Roll Sesame chicken Chow Fun Noodles-Chicken The Sesame Chicken and Chow Fun Noodles-Chicken were delicious and portions were great but the rolls were far from tasty. If I could would give a 3.4!

Pretty good overall! Some of the rolls were definitely better than others. We were the only ones in the restaurant and the service was fantastic. Very quick to get the rolls out after ordering. Kept our waters full throughout the meal. The coconut shrimp was excellent. Overall a little over priced, but seems on par for Hawaii. Note: We are a little worried the sushi made me sick as about 30 min after eating I threw up some of the sushi in my mouth and then that night I was nauseous all night and threw up multiple times. Possible it was due to something else, but worth noting.

We came here because the place we wanted to try was closed. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. We did not order any sushi -we had the Chinese food. This place also opens later than the other restaurants around. The price and portions were good.

From the moment we walked in, as they had just opened, it was hospitality. I asked to have a larger more roomier table and she gave the 5 of us their largest table. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm. The service is relaxed and warm and accommodating. The food it outstanding, truly amazing. From the sushi, appetizers, to the main meals it was all incredible. I will be back. The cost is very reasonable for the quality of such large servings. Oh, the picture of the Shrimp Tempura, it was so good and smelled so good that everyone was just attacking it. So order it and enjoy. Maybe you can take a better picture of the 6 giant shrimp on the plate before they get gobbled up.
