Taeng-On Thai Food
About
Authentic Spice in the Heart of Kona
Finding a genuine plate of Pad Thai under the Hawaiian sun can be a challenge, but Taeng-On Thai Food brings the heat to the Big Island. Located right in the bustling commercial corridors of Kailua-Kona, this spot is a humble favorite for those who prioritize bold flavors over fancy decor. The kitchen specializes in traditional preparations, with their spicy green curry serving as a standout for anyone craving an authentic, aromatic kick.
The Atmosphere
Don't expect white tablecloths here. The space is straightforward and casual, designed for quick lunches or a low-key dinner after a day of snorkeling. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of metal pans hitting burners as the chefs work through orders. The air is consistently thick with the scent of roasted garlic, kaffir lime leaves, and sizzling chilies, which hits you the moment you step through the door.
Local Tips
Since this local gem is tucked away near major shopping areas, parking can get a bit tight during the peak midday rush, so plan accordingly. If you are sensitive to heat, be sure to communicate your spice preference clearly when ordering, as the kitchen does not hold back on the Thai chilies. It is the perfect stop if you are staying nearby and want a meal that feels like a quick escape to Bangkok without leaving the Kailua-Kona coast.

Food was authentic and delicious. Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. It was very busy when I went but service was still great. Highly recommend!

Great spot overlooking busy street. I went right when they opened on a weekday so no one else was there. Excellent basil shrimp and spice was a perfect level 3! Veggies and shrimp were prepared just right. Summer rolls were also very good. The biggest treat was the Chang beer! I don't get that much at all in Georgia, nor do we get great Thai. I thought the price was very fair compared to what I've had for lower end Thai food.

Food was extraordinary! I loved the house yellow curry. I substituted chicken for shrimp and it was A++++z Hubby had the pad won sen and it was pretty awesome. You get to add your own spice level so the hubby ate the whole chili sauce lol. I would definitely recommend and will come bacj.

This Thai restaurant is on the second floor and is a wonderful place! The fried rice we had was amazing as was the red curry chicken. The service was attentive and friendly. Everything had wonderful taste and the cost was very reasonable.

Somewhat authentic Thai restaurant. I came here because of the recommendation from our guest house. I was not thrilled when I saw no one in the restaurant when we got there. It was around 7pm. Overall taste was average. I was going to give a 4 stars but they served me a warm beer. They basically told me that glass cup is cold so suck it up. My very first meal in Kona wasn't much of an experience.

As Thai food goes, this location is a bit below average. Definitely not bad but not much beyond that. We ordered two Pad-Thai and both seemed to have been systematically constructed as neither had more chicken than the other (very little) and both had exactly two shrimp (with tails still attached). The basil rolls were very good. The flavor profile was what's to be expected but there was no spice level option. (If you love Thai food you know what that means). The dishes are served at spice level zero. Overall, if you try it, the food will be fresh and flavorful. If you skip it, your haven't missed much.
