A Slice of Tokyo on the Kona Coast

Tucked away from the heavy foot traffic of Ali'i Drive, Sushi Shiono offers a precise, elevated departure from the typical resort-heavy dining options found across the Big Island. The space is unassuming, favoring minimalist wood aesthetics that shift the entire focus onto the raw fish prep station. You’ll hear the quiet, rhythmic clicking of knives against hardwood rather than the typical island bass-heavy playlists found at nearby beach bars.

The Art of the Omakase

Chef Shiono has built a reputation in Hawaii for an uncompromising approach to quality. While the menu spans a wide variety of Japanese small plates, the nigiri is the undeniable centerpiece. Expect buttery hamachi and melt-in-your-mouth bluefin tuna that arrives at the perfect temperature—never ice-cold. If you opt for the omakase, you are placing your evening in the hands of masters who prioritize the seasonal arrival of fish flown in directly from Japan's Toyosu market.

Know Before You Go

The interior is compact, which means the atmosphere can get quite energetic and loud when the room is full. It is an ideal spot for serious sushi enthusiasts or couples looking for a mid-week date night where the food, rather than the scenery, takes center stage. Note that the popularity of this spot often leads to a bustling front-of-house, so booking ahead is a practical necessity for weekend dinners. For those navigating the Kailua-Kona area, finding a parking spot in the immediate vicinity can occasionally be a puzzle, so plan to arrive a few minutes early to secure your space before sitting down to some of the cleanest, most authentic rolls and sashimi in the state.

I had a mixed experience at Izakaya Shiono. While there are many things to like about the atmosphere, several issues with the food left room for improvement. The Tako Wasabi tasted fine, but the portion size was disappointingly small. I also tried the oysters; while the seasoning and dressing were quite good, the variety of oyster used wasn't the best quality. it lacked that premium, plump texture. For the Sashimi part,Most of the fish was decent. The Uni was very fresh and sweet. However, the Toro was a bit lean for my liking and didn't have that signature melt-in-your-mouth fat content. Most concerning was finding a fish bone in my sashimi. Proper deboning is fundamental for raw fish, and I really hope the kitchen team can be more meticulous with their prep work moving forward.

We had a wonderful time here a few months ago celebrating an anniversary. Very delicious and authentic foods. We actually ordered too much and had to take some home with us! We even splurged for some Sake. Sitting outside was wonderful, we were surrounded by plants and flowers, even torches once the sun had set. Although it was on the side walk, it was a very nice atmosphere. Excited to go back this Saturday for Valentine’s Day.

Fantastic Japanese spot right in Kona — busy, but absolutely worth it. The menu is pretty extensive and honestly I need to go back to try more. The sushi coming out of the kitchen looked incredible, but I just didn’t have room this time. I had the oyster shooters, mini ramen, and the chicken katsu don — all were amazing. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. You can tell they take pride in every dish. They also have an extensive sake selection, which is a huge plus if you’re into pairing your meal with something special. Definitely make a reservation. I went later in the evening and waited a while, but again — totally worth it. Can’t wait to return!

Absolutely incredible food! So glad we stopped in. We got here right when it opened, glad we did because it’s very obviously a hot spot! I’ll be thinking about that ramen for awhile!

Caught us off guard by how good the food was! Great authentic Japanese dishes and friendly fast service. Loved the mini ramen - served as the perfect add-on. Outdoor seating is lovely and there's often live music in the area. Must stop if you're in the Kona area!

We have already been here a year ago and we’re not disappointed again. The restaurant gets busy, there is a line even before they open. We’ve ordered a variety of appetizers, and some main dishes such as yellowtail and Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen. All the dishes were really tasty, some portions could have been a little bit bigger but the quality was great. Service was always attentive and did a great job. Would always come back

Food 5/5 - Ordered chirashi sushi bowl and 5 kinds sashimi. Fish for both was high quality and very fresh, as the texture was soft with no hints of being frozen. The wasabi definitely stings up the nose, so be mindful of how much you use. Miso soup was nice and hot. Service 3/5 - It was Christmas eve during our visit and it was very packed. The sushi bar seemed to have sent our order to another table, as our sashimi plate came out in 5 minutes, while we had to flag our server asking about our chirashi bowl after waiting about 20 minutes. Our server was apologetic for the inconvenience. Atmosphere 3/5 - Interior is average, as there’s nothing visually to capture your attention span while waiting for your meal. Overall - Had a pleasant experience and would visit again.

One of the few places that you can try Butterfish, which is like Chilean seabass or cod, but flakier. The oysters were fresh and dressed with green onion, masago fish eggs, and ponzu. The salmon skin salad had nice crunchy salmon skin. There’s plenty of free parking, a lot in the back as well as street parking. Pro tip: if you planning to spend at least $100, then go to the nearby Costco to get their gift card and save $$ ($100 GC for $80).
