SUSHI COCORO & UDON NOODLE -TUNA-ICHI-
About
A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Kona
Tucked away from the bustling main strip of Kailua-Kona, Sushi Cocoro & Udon Noodle -Tuna-Ichi- serves as a quiet sanctuary for those seeking uncompromising Japanese craft. The space is modest and utilitarian, prioritizing the integrity of the fish over elaborate decor. You will find yourself drawn into a room where the rhythmic slicing of tuna and the bubbling of dashi stock create a grounded, authentic soundtrack.
The Art of the Bowl
The menu leans heavily into traditional preparations that honor the ingredients. The udon is the standout here—the noodles possess a distinct chewiness that is hard to find elsewhere on the Big Island, served in a broth that is both clean and deeply savory. The house focus on tuna is apparent the moment you see the texture of the sashimi, which reflects a commitment to quality sourced from the surrounding Pacific waters. The nigiri arrives perfectly tempered, with the rice temperature serving as a subtle bridge to the cool, fatty fish.
Practical Notes for Your Visit
This is a spot for diners who prioritize culinary substance over ambiance. The seating is intimate, which means you might find yourself catching snippets of conversation from the neighboring table, but that only adds to the localized, communal feel of the dining room. Parking can be a bit of a challenge due to the high demand from locals, so plan your arrival accordingly. Whether you are craving a restorative bowl of hot udon after a long day of snorkeling or a precise piece of sashimi, this kitchen delivers a focused, high-quality experience that bypasses tourist fluff in favor of genuine skill.

Step off the streets of Kona and into an authentic Japanese experience! This small, unassuming, restaurant is tucked at the back of a courtyard, and it isn’t a stretch to imagine you’re in Japan as you step through the door. Absolutely fresh, ocean to table, great service while we were there. The space is small, and a line forms outside in the courtyard as people wait for tables to open up, so make sure you bring patience - the food is absolutely worth it.

I’ve both dined in and ordered take out from Sushi Cocoro and every meal I’ve had has been delicious, fresh, and full of flavor! Top notch! And their latest chirashi bowl: The Kona Gold, is excellent! Very high quality and thoughtfully prepared. The team is also always super friendly, helpful and responsive. Don’t sleep on this gem in Kona!

Went to Sushi Cocoro on a weekday night for a quick dinner and it really hit the spot. We ordered the ahi belly bowl, special nigiri, and a few rolls. Everything tasted fresh, especially the tuna. I was honestly skeptical about deep fried sushi, but the Volcano Roll (deep fried California roll) was surprisingly so good, crispy outside while still light and flavorful. Great casual spot for a fresh and quick sushi fix.

I had an absolutely fantastic dining experience at this sushi restaurant! While their sushi is great, the udon noodles were exceptionally delicious!broth was incredibly rich and packed with flavor, and the noodles had the perfect chewy texture. Another standout was the fried fish, which was very unique and had a special flavor profile you don't find just anywhere; it was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Excellent food and wonderful service. I highly recommend this place!

If I could give 10 stars I would. When they say “fresh catch of the day” they mean it!!! The rolls and bowls were fresh, flavorful and soooooo good. Prices are so good! You can come in and grab a couple of rolls for less than $25. Want beer and wine? Got it also. We went after a long day of working and when I day we ate, we ate! A bowl, 6 roll, seaweed salad and if I could fit more I would have, it was that good. The customer service was great and I feel like I left with a new friend. Hawai’i is amazing and the aloha spirit is strong here.

Stumbled upon this spot while walking the town & so glad we did! Great price for just the basic rolls, we got tuna, salmon, & hamachi. They all came with sriracha mayo on it which was nice. Beers were very cold & sushi was fresh & quick. A place I’d stop again if in the area.

The atmosphere is nothing super fancy but the food is fresh and my server was kind. Honestly really good at a great price. I would come here again. I got the Hot Lava Roll (amazing) has poke style on top, The Spicy Alaska Roll, and the Hawaiian California roll (has mango and it’s SO fresh) . Those 3 rolls were more than enough for me. I also got a Poke bowl to go and that was just as amazing and fresh. Overall I’d recommend the Hot Lava, The poke bowl or the Hawaiian California the most. Left to right of the rolls in the. photos are the Hot Lava, Hawaiian California, Spicy Alaska, Poke bowl
