Front Row Seats to the Pacific

When the sun dips toward the horizon in Kailua-Kona, the Sunset Terrace offers a perspective on the Big Island coastline that few other spots can match. The space is defined by its open-air architecture, allowing the salt-tinged breeze to carry the sound of crashing surf directly to your table. It is the kind of place where the transition from late afternoon heat to the cool, purple hues of twilight feels like a performance.

Island Flavors and High-Tide Hues

The kitchen focuses on what the Pacific brings in daily. You will find that the signature mahi-mahi and local poke bowls are served with an unpretentious confidence. Expect the sharp, acidic bite of fresh lilikoi dressings and the earthiness of locally sourced taro sides. The clinking of mai tais and the low hum of relaxed conversation create a soundscape that is quintessentially Hawaiian.

Local Nuances

While the view is the primary draw, guests should note that the popularity of the sunset hour means the terrace fills up quickly; parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle, so arriving early gives you a chance to scout a spot before the sky turns orange. It is an ideal setting for those who prioritize atmosphere over formality—perfect for a post-snorkel meal or a quiet evening watch. Whether you are a visitor looking to capture that postcard-perfect glow or a local winding down, the terrace maintains a rhythm that syncs perfectly with the tide.

I love this place for happy hour. $2 off the mai tais, which isn't a lot, but they are sizable and delicious. Sitting by the swimming pool with the ocean in the background is the cherry on top. We got the wings with sauce on the side which were great... deep fried and crunchy.

Sunset Terrace has fallen from its former glory days of “Ono” food, tasty cocktails and stellar service to offering bland and overpriced consumables accompanied by inconsistent service depending on the day you visit. As Wyndham owners and business professionals, we understand that sometimes our expectations far exceed our experiences. However, since the prior co-owner left, this place continues its downward trajectory. Current ownership and management should be held accountable for this continued disappointment we have experienced in the last five years. After speaking with other Wyndham owners and local business professionals we have discovered this has been a growing concern due to poor bar and grill leadership. The “golden rule” in the service industry is simple and relative to the best selling book in the world if that’s your belief. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In an environment that should appeal to all of your sensory emotions, Sunset Terrace management and ownership has failed to live up to that expectation through witnessed outbursts of rudeness and belligerence that have forced us and our neighbors and colleagues to find alternative accommodations and dining experiences until Wyndham rectifies this ongoing display of poor restaurant behavior and inconsistent service. In fact, the only thing consistent is the sunset view.

Sunset Terrace is open to the public, despite being in a resort. The food is decent; drinks were ok. We liked the live music, but not really watching resort guests frolicking in their pool. Sunset views were fine, but you can't see the western horizon so there are better spots for that. The palms do help a lot. Service was...poor. I get it, even servers have bad days, so maybe it's not always like that.

We are staying at this resort, and my husband wanted a Mai Tai. They have a happy hour. The drink was some well rum and some kind of mixed fruit juice. It wasn't great. My daughter had a grilled cheese sandwich, and the cheese had touched the grill, making it taste like gas or chemicals. I had a BLT, which tasted ok, but was cold. It took a rather long time for 2 sandwiches to come out from the kitchen. Just kind of "meh" all the way around.

Hands down the best fish and chips. They were steaks of fish, lightly beer battered and stuffed with fish steak. We live in SoCal with English taverns that swear they’ve got the best fish and chips. They’re wrong, Sunset Terrace has the best. The guitar solo was outstanding, soothing and easy to listen while conversation with those around us. Friendly pool for the kids to play in while we watched the sunset of sunsets. So glad we spent our last night relaxing after a week jammed full of mantas, beaches, star gazing and volcanoes. Don’t let your to do list ruin your sanity of enjoying the moment with your family. Put the camera down and enjoy your family. The next blink might be the last.

My wife, daughter and mother-in-law stayed at the resort. Thought we would check out the local restaurant and bar. We were not impressed. Do not get the Hummus plate. It was the worst ever soggy zucchini pickled green beans. The hummus was watery just beware. Chicken wings okay, Lot of breading not very much meat. The french fries were actually pretty good, The lava flow drink was decent. Kids chicken had more meat. The service was okay and they don't have enough menus to give to each table so we had to wait for a menu and 30 minutes for chicken wings. I feel like who ever is in charge of this resort is letting it go and isn't keeping things consistent from the resort to the restaurant for example. I hope that helps you and best of luck with your experience.

Top points: - Very fast service - yummy food, with a good amount of options for main course + dessert - Amazing live music until 8 p.m. - Right beside the resort pool, so you can swim and enjoy the music at the same time!

So glad we found this place. Everything up the coast was holding 1.5-2h wait times. This was across the street from our condo and we wish we had found it sooner. Very helpful with gluten and dairy free needs and the food was generous and delicious. Our server, Trent?, was so helpful and friendly. Don’t pass this place up. The terrace is beautiful and looks out over the water perfectly to watch sunset.

What a lovely spot for an intimate show and incredible sunsets! Our server was Emily and she was so wonderful. Emily recommended the pulled pork sandwich, and she didn't steer me wrong! The sandwich was piled high with delicious Hawaiian-style pulled pork (not as smoky as southern BBQ, and a lot sweeter), which melted in my mouth each bite since it was so tender. This was a great sandwich. Emily also recommended the Mai Tais, which were the perfect accompaniment to the beautiful views of the ocean, sunset, and the incredibly talented Colin John who performed on the Terrace. Come here during a performance and you are certain to have a memorable evening.

Food was average honestly. Kind of like bar food at most places. Service was rather inconsistent. Not rude, just hard to get more water, for example. View is nice though. It’s hard to find the “entrance” as its adjacent to the resort’s pool. Go through one of the gates where guests enter the pool and you’ll find the restaurant.
