A Local Staple in the Heart of Kailua-Kona

Stepping into Sean's Kitchen feels like uncovering the town's best-kept secret. Located right in the vibrant center of Kailua-Kona, this spot captures the unpretentious spirit of the Big Island. The air is thick with the savory, sweet scent of ginger-soy glazes and the smoky char of the grill, cutting through the salty Pacific breeze that drifts in from the nearby coastline.

The Culinary Experience

Expect a menu that prioritizes local sourcing over flair. The kitchen leans heavily into Hawaiian-inspired comfort food. Locals swear by the daily catch, often pulled from the Kona waters just hours before hitting the plate. The flavor profiles here are punchy and direct—think caramelized edges on succulent proteins and generous portions of perfectly steamed jasmine rice. It’s the kind of cooking that doesn't try too hard because the quality of the ingredients does the heavy lifting.

Why Kona Locals Keep Coming Back

The space is functional and efficient, favoring high-top tables and a fast-paced energy that reflects the bustling streets of West Hawaii. It’s perfect for a quick, high-quality lunch after a morning in the surf or a casual dinner when you want to avoid the tourist-heavy resort scenes. A minor word of advice: the lunch rush can get intense, and seating is communal, which only adds to the honest, neighborhood feel of the place. If you are looking for white tablecloths, look elsewhere; if you are looking for the genuine taste of Kailua-Kona prepared with precision and heart, this is your destination.

RUN!!!!!!! I saw someone’s comments and decided to dine in.(Jose u tripping:/ the broth tasted like pepper water) We haven’t eaten for 12 hours, but this food is really hard to swallow, we didn’t even finish. The staff were nice though.

It’s a small place, Once seated they ignored us for a long time until we finally got waters and then I was gonna ask a few questions about the things in the menu that actually say (ask our server) Every time I asked a question she was super rude to answer and the when we went to order one roll to start she said “most people just order everything at once” and the stops there waiting for us to order and then took the menus. Absolutely horrible service. The 4 of us started to split two appetizers by the time we decided to find another restaurant to eat. Update: I’ve already posted the photo of your interior—stop trying to imply I wasn't there. I don’t need a receipt to prove that your service was hostile. Instead of hiding behind fake "99%" statistics, you should hold your staff accountable for the rude behavior I actually experienced. Asking for a receipt is just a tactic to shift the blame back onto the customer. If you truly cared about "happy experiences," you’d spend more time training your servers and less time making excuses on Google. Your defensive attitude proves that the problem starts from the top. I will not be back, and I will make sure others know exactly how you treat feedback.

I had a special request for them to cook a special fish I caught— they did an incredible job preparing it 😍. Just note you won’t find this fish on the menu!

First time customer. Maybe the owner wasn’t there, but with four chefs in the kitchen, I expected better, at the very least, a hot bowl of ramen. Instead, the broth was lukewarm, the egg was cold, and the whole dish lacked the care you’d hope for. Lukewarm might work for my toddler which would be perfect, but not for a proper ramen experience. This didn’t come close to the quality you’d expect from Japan level ramen. The fries were hot but the inside wasn’t cooked thoroughly. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t come back. That said, there were some positives. It’s a great spot for families, and the food came out quickly, about 5-6 minutes from ordering. Deep fried stuff might be ok to order for kids. The service was good: when I asked for hot water, the young waiter kindly brought me hot water with lemon in a nice teapot and cup, which I really appreciated.

Seriously some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. We got the OMG roll and the Crunchy roll. Service was very quick and the staff was friendly. Would definitely come back again to try more rolls.

We unexpectedly stumbled upon this restaurant, and what a hidden gem! I ordered Chirashi which was delicious and beautifully presented. Others in my party ordered orange blossom, cherry blossom, and Alaska rolls. The fish is very fresh and the service friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

Honestly most underrated restaurant in Kona. Authentic food, lots of space - gives diner vibes and the hours are amazing! Things close so early in Kona and this is the go to night spot!

Very good experience overall. The staff was friendly and the place was clean. Vegan dishes are clearly marked on the menu which makes choosing food super straightforward. We ordered the vegan udon and overall it was amazing. The broth was really flavorful, the udon slightly overcooked but still good and the tofu was nice too. One suggestion would be to use firm tofu instead of silken tofu or at least give customers the option to choose. We also tried the agedashi tofu. This was tasty as well but especially for this dish a firmer tofu would really elevate it. The avocado and vegetable rolls could be improved. The vegetables were quite crunchy, the avocado portion very small and the roll itself wasn’t very compact. It would also be great to see more creative vegan roll options for example with sweet potato or roasted peppers. The edamame were good though the portion could have been a bit more generous.

Sort of clean. Condiment containers were sticky but tables had been wiped and there was no food on the booths. Bathrooms are outside. Fish was fresh but other ingredients did not seem high quality. Avocado crunchy. Sushi rice almost tasted like plain white rice. Miso too salty to consume. The water tasted good! Probably filtered, which was nice. BYOB and the liquor store next door is closed on Sunday and Monday. The server was great. He welcomed us, brought chilled glasses for our beer and extra napkins without being asked. Sushi delivery was very prompt.
