Oceanfront Dining in the Heart of Kailua Village

Perched directly over the black lava rocks of the Kona coastline, Don the Beachcomber at the Royal Kona Resort offers more than just a meal; it provides a front-row seat to the Pacific. As the sun dips below the horizon, the rhythmic crashing of waves against the shore becomes the primary soundtrack, punctuated only by the distant chime of cocktail glasses and the hum of travelers sharing stories of their day on the Big Island.

Island-Inspired Flavors

The kitchen leans heavily into Hawaiian regional cuisine, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced seafood. The signature macadamia nut-crusted catch of the day is a staple here, paired with sides that celebrate tropical harvest. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch while overlooking Kailua Bay or settling in for a multi-course dinner under the stars, the menu emphasizes bold, bright flavors that mirror the surrounding climate.

A Local Perspective

While the panoramic ocean views are the main draw, be prepared for the reality of an open-air layout. On particularly windy Kona afternoons, napkins might take flight, and the mist from the surf occasionally reaches the patio tables—a small price to pay for the proximity to the water. It is an ideal spot for visitors who want to feel the salt air without leaving the comfort of their chairs.

Why Visit?

This is not a spot for those seeking hushed, intimate conversation, as the resort energy is palpable and buzzing. Instead, it is best suited for groups and couples who appreciate a lively atmosphere, iconic Mai Tais, and the legendary history of the Big Island coastline. Parking can get tight in the hotel lot during peak sunset hours, so arriving a few minutes early to secure a spot is highly recommended to ensure you don't miss the first golden rays of the evening.

We had a wonderful experience staying here. We were set up in a corner room of the Bay Tower facing the ocean and downtown Kona. The room was huge, the corner balcony was great, and we could hear the ocean waves almost every night. We could also hear the nightly music at the downtown restaurants and some traffic noise, but we just popped in ear plugs and slept fine. We loved the salt water lagoon, pool, and bar/restaurant at the hotel. The location was perfect for walking downtown as well. 10/10 would stay here again.

The rooms and the common areas were all clean, but the rooms are in need of an update. There aren’t many resort amenities that you wouldn’t already find offered at a hotel other than the complimentary Mai-tais. We upgraded to an ocean front room - definitely worth the upgrade! The location is great with convenient access to restaurants and shopping.

For what it is, the royal kona is good. the room was very dirty and covered in hair when we got in, but they did move us to a different room when we spoke to them about it. The rooms are not anything special, and bathrooms are cramped and falling apart. The beds are very comfortable, location is amazing, ocean view and lobby incredibly beautiful. Service was good and employees very kind. Parking is overpriced at 25 dollars a day, but I guess that’s standard. The biggest issue was with the restaurant. We went at 6:30AM our first morning here, and I ordered a cup of coffee that was 5 dollars and it was like water. The coffee in the room also tasted like dirty dishwater. It wasn’t the best having to travel 10 minutes every day as soon as we wake up to have a decent coffee. Then our food came, and they tried to serve me completely raw inedible pancakes. My boyfriend’s food was also not good. I sent mine back and we left to get food elsewhere. Skip the breakfast. Once again, this room works if you just want a place to lay your head. I would come back, but I’ll never eat here again.

Room had a great view and was generally clean. However the bathrooms did not have separate shampoo and conditioner. Also the patio was a bit dusty and not kept up to date. Generally the hotel was clean but there is a dated feel to it. But the room had an amazing view and that’s what you’re there for. I wouldn’t say this is a luxury resort but I expected a bit more for the price I paid.

We stayed here for 11 nights in January and had an amazing time visiting so many sites on this incredible island. After an initial snafu caused by booking thru Chase, amazing Mandy made it right the next morning and placed us in a fully renovated room in the Lagoon building. Even though we could see construction/renovation going on, it did not disturb us. If they intend to upgrade all the buildings this way, it will be an outstanding landmark hotel again (in answer to reviews complaining of age and smells). Our room had an immaculate mini kitchen, porch with ocean front view on which we had coffee in morning watching fish, birds, boats & late night caps watching waves, lovely bath and closet with plenty of hangers. Nearby private lagoon and pool were wonderful in different ways. Restaurant was so good (Royal Fresh Catch) we had to make ourselves walk down the strip to try other places. We went to two concerts hosted by the resort, one with Mark Yamanaka which was spectacular. Please try some of the lessons they offer; we enjoyed one hula and two ukulele lessons - great instructors. The Luau is considered one of the best on Hawaii. Big shout out to amazing desk staff Kevin, Mandy and Ann, concierge Melody, bartender Dayne, and waitresses Melanie, Iona, Rebekha and Lacy who were just some of the most pleasant, helpful, kind & professional staff. We will be back absolutely!!!!

Wondeful resort in a perfect location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Call out to front staff Mandi and Ann who went above and beyond, as did restaurant staff Jenny and James. Rooms were very nice, but the blinds allowed too much light through. Pool was also nice, but on-site natural lagoon was perfect. We loved the luau, but didn't like being told by the photo lady that we had to line up to buy our photo afterwards, as it would not be available to buy online afterwards. Next morning I received an email requesting us to buy the photo online, which I gladly did. Food was excellent and gated parking a plus. Will return to this resort if we go back to Hawai'i.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Royal Kona Resort, and there were so many moments that made the trip memorable. What stood out: Stunning views and prime location- The setting is gorgeous, with great views and a super convenient spot right in the heart of Kona. Tons of amazing restaurants nearby made it so easy to explore. Thoughtful welcome and celebratory vibes- Champagne waiting for us on arrival for our anniversary was a lovely surprise and added a special celebratory touch. 😍 Warm, friendly service- The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, which really boosted the overall vibe of the trip. Dons Mai Tai Bar perks- The bar downstairs was convenient, and the two complimentary mai tais on arrival were a fun bonus. Bathroom space and convenience- The bathrooms are a bit small. A towel hook or hook on the door would be handy so towels aren’t draped over the toilet. A full-length or extra mirror in the room would also be great, especially since the bathroom can get steamy. Pool and beach access- Extending pool hours a bit beyond sunset and adding a hot tub would be awesome for evening downtime. While the lagoon is lovely for exploration, I missed having a nearby beach area that I didn’t have to drive too. Bottom line- Royal Kona Resort offers beautiful views, a fantastic location, and genuinely friendly service that made my anniversary stay feel special. Although we didn’t do the luau, i definitely would check out the one at this hotel. It looked fantastic.

The view from our balcony is amazing. Staff from the gift shop, grounds and housekeeping are very accommodating. That’s all I can say. I don’t think the facilities provided what they say they will provide. There is only a lagoon and small …

I absolutely love this hotel. I truly don’t think you can find a better location and ambiance in Kona. We stayed here for 6 nights and each day was perfect. The views from the hotel pool and from the rooms is unbeatable. You are right on the ocean and can see the waves crashing on the beautiful lava rocks. The rooms were comfortable with a mini fridge, hair dryer, and safe. The resort staff were all friendly and super helpful. They have reef safe sunscreen at the pool (included in the resort fee) so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. Self service guest laundry is available, so if that’s something you’re looking for it’s a plus. It was $2.50/machine. The location is extremely walkable to Kailua-Kona shops & restaurants, tho you don’t even have to leave if you don’t want to. The bar & restaurant downstairs was delicious, albeit a little pricey, but what isn’t expensive in Hawaii. The beauty of this hotel’s lobby is something that will stay with me forever.
