A Slice of Mexico on the Big Island
Tucked away from the typical tourist trails of Kailua-Kona, Paradise Mexican Store serves as a genuine portal to authentic regional flavors. This isn’t your typical sit-down tourist spot; it’s a functional market and quick-service kitchen where the air is thick with the scent of toasted corn husks and slow-simmered chiles.
The Flavors of Home
Locals head here for the house-made tamales and carnitas that offer a sharp contrast to the island’s usual seafood-heavy menus. The kitchen relies on traditional preparation methods, resulting in beans that taste like they spent all morning on the stove and salsas that pack a legitimate, slow-building heat. If you are hunting for specific Mexican pantry staples—the kind you can’t find at the big-box grocery stores near the coast—this is your primary resource on the west side of the Big Island.
What to Expect When You Arrive
Stepping inside feels like stumbling upon a neighborhood secret. The space is modest and utilitarian, prioritizing function over flash. Be prepared for a bit of a localized experience: parking in this Kona enclave can get tight during the busy lunch hour, and you might have to navigate a brief queue of regulars waiting for their daily fix. It is an unpretentious, straightforward spot perfect for those who value substance over interior design. Whether you’re grabbing a hearty burrito to fuel a day of snorkeling or stocking up on hard-to-find ingredients to cook at your vacation rental, this store provides a consistent, no-nonsense slice of Mexican culinary tradition in the heart of Hawaii.

Came to get groceries, 3rd time in a row over 2 months. Mid afternoon, sign says open, hours say open, lights are on but door is locked and no one answering the phone waited each time over an hour. Simply wanted some spicy peanuts and a lufa.

I would rate it 0 if I could. I purchased some candy and when I took a bite I realized it was rancid. I tried to return it and the woman who owns the shop refused to refund me and also swore at me.

This is the BEST Mexican store in Hawaii. They had such a huge variety of items and fresh bread. The have huge piñatas and candy bags as well as fresh produce. This is just a business like target and Walmart of course not as big but if you come in thinking it’s going to be cheaper just because it’s a small store you’re wrong. The business also has expenses so don’t come in trying to negotiate a price because you don’t do that target or others stores while your checking out unless your those type of people. Good hours of operation and the owner is very nice and sweet always giving recipes and recommendations. She’s always giving back to her community. SUPPORT LOCAL!!!

Had exactly what I needed and more! A little bit pricier than mainland, but to be expected for imports/ specialty items. The store is 100% authentic Mexican!

It's an amazing little store. Tiny but packed with a lot of beautiful handmade mexican pottery. Lots of fresh foods and ingredients you won't find anywhere else on the island. The owner is super friendly and cheerful. We come here about once a month from Hilo side. 100% recommended
