Nephi's Smokehouse
About
Pit-Smoked Perfection on the Big Island
When the scent of kiawe wood smoke drifts across the streets of Kailua-Kona, locals know exactly where it is coming from. Nephi's Smokehouse brings a no-frills, high-flavor approach to barbecue that feels like a backyard luau condensed into a masterclass of slow-cooked proteins. This isn't your typical white-tablecloth resort dining; it is authentic, fall-off-the-bone comfort food designed for those who prefer paper plates and napkins by the stack.
The Smokehouse Experience
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the brisket, smoked low and slow until the bark is perfectly seasoned and the interior turns buttery soft. If you are lucky enough to visit when the pulled pork is fresh out of the smoker, pair it with their signature house-made sauces that balance tangy sweetness with a subtle volcanic heat. You will hear the low hum of conversation mixed with the rhythmic clinking of cutlery, a stark contrast to the distant, crashing waves of the Pacific nearby.
Local Tips for Your Visit
Finding a spot in Kailua-Kona can be tricky during the lunch rush, and parking near the smokehouse requires a bit of patience, but the payoff is worth the hunt. It is the ideal stop for surfers coming off the water or anyone looking to fuel up after exploring the Kona coast. Keep in mind that when the meat runs out, they close the doors, so arriving early is the best way to ensure you get your pick of the daily specials. It is loud, it is smoky, and it is unapologetically delicious—exactly what you want when hunting for the best barbecue in Hawaii.

They know what they’re doing. We loved our meals here. The inside dining area is no frills and the food is the star. This was the best local food we’ve had. I highly recommend the short ribs (Kalbi) and the Korean fried chicken. We plan to go back to try other things.

Don't skip out on this place -it was great. You can't see inside from the parking lot, but don't let that deter you. The service was super friendly and good was great. The spicy garlic furikake was delicious. Serving size was enough for two people. Not fast food and absolutely worth the 15 min wait.

Amazing food and service. This is a family run restaurant and they instantly serve you with a smile. We had the smoked meat egg Benedict and wow the smoked meat is so good. Not incredibly smoky with amazing flavor and sweetness. I had the steak loco moco and the gravy is amazing and the steak is so tender. I will be back again. The portions are also big.

Nephi’s Smokehouse is an absolute gem in Kona! Their Loco Mocos are to die for, hands down the best I’ve ever had. My only regret is not finding this spot sooner so I could have enjoyed it more during my trip. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming; sitting inside felt like being part of a family. The staff were incredibly friendly, chatting with us and answering any questions we had about the menu. They made the experience personal and memorable, which is rare and so appreciated. If you’re in Kona, do yourself a favor and make Nephi’s Smokehouse a priority, you won’t be disappointed!

One of the best plate lunches I’ve ever had. Unbelievable Korean fried chicken that was crispy, juicy, and tender with a delicious sauce. Kalbi ribs were incredible as well. Portions were excellent with great rice and mac salad.

This place is the definition of a mom and pop shop. I got the fried rice with smoked pork and a fried egg on top. The wife got a breakfast sandwich. To top it off we got the Poi balls with the ube sauce. This place absolutely blew me away. Even as visitors to this island the people made us feel at home and engaged in personal conversations with us. Highly recommend

Let's start with the staff, the nicest, friendly, helpful staff. Utterly friendly and accommodating, feels like you're at your grandmother's house. Now the food, made to order and was excellent. Well made, flavorful and delicious. Wonderful choices to choose from. Banana lumpia was the bomb. Definitely a must try for local food in the area. Great people great food, what more could you ask for more.

I came here with high hopes based on all the amazing reviews. We tried 5 dishes and our favorite was the smokehouse fries...I got the kalbi plate and it was mostly fat. The Mac salad has tuna or something weird in it. The Korean boneless chicken was hit and miss with chewable pieces, but the sauce was good. Sadly none of us were very impressed and left hungry after spending 100 dollars. The fried rice was pretty good though.
