Where Kailua-Kona Locals Catch the Game

If you are wandering through the heart of Ali'i Drive looking for a place that feels like home, Laverne's Sports Bar is where the island energy meets a classic pub atmosphere. It is the go-to spot in Kailua-Kona for those who want to swap the quiet beach scenery for a high-energy environment filled with the sounds of cheering fans and local live bands.

A Hub for Island Entertainment

The space is built for social spirits. With high-definition screens lining the walls, you won't miss a play, whether it is football season or a big UFC fight. When the sun dips below the Pacific horizon, the mood shifts; the bar frequently hosts live music acts that bring a rowdy, authentic spirit to the waterfront district. You will smell the faint tang of salt air mixing with the savory aroma of their signature burgers and wings as soon as you step through the door.

The Practical Side of Ali'i Drive

While the atmosphere is unmatched for late-night revelry and catching up with friends, keep in mind that parking along this busy strip can be a bit of a hunt during peak evening hours. It is best to arrive early if you are aiming for a prime seat near the stage or the main screen. The crowd is a diverse mix of seasonal visitors and long-time residents, making it a genuine slice of Kailua-Kona life. Whether you are looking for a cold beer after a snorkel trip or a late-night venue to keep the party moving, this is the center of gravity for nightlife in the area.

Great little - albeit huge - dive bar. Only 1 pool table, kinda have to share with locals and whoever shows up. Music was very well chosen, not too busy, reasonable prices for beers. Really the ocean being so close to it makes it a stand out place - wish it worked a bit later.

It wasn’t busy on a Tuesday evening at Sunset. I had the fish and chips. The fish was really good! There were 5 of us and we all ordered something different. The French Dip was good too. (Says my brother in law) he ordered it the day before too when he went with his new wife. Everyone was happy with their food choices. The wait person was pleasant and the prices were reasonable. The view is nice if you sit by the railing. No complaints from us.

It’s been a couple of years but I still think about Laverne’s and Kona. Loved the views, laid back vibe, atmosphere and decor. I have the bartender $20 extra by accident and he gave it back even though I hadn’t noticed - great honesty. Fried pickles and other picky food was nice. Big & cheap cocktails, delicious too. I’d go back in a second if we weren’t in the UK!

Top notch across the board. Great service from our bartender. The loco moco continues to be THE BEST in Kailua-Kona. I added jalapeños to mine but have ordered it "as delivered" several times before and the kitchen is consistent. Add a Bloody Mary and a cup of coffee to round out a great visit. This is becoming a regular visit with friends.

We just came for drinks, we were in a wedding party with a majority of people 40+. Bar was empty and both the bartender and “security” were so RUDE. I understand checking younger folks IDs but cmon 50 year olds getting their ID checked is pretty insane. No hello on arrival, no accommodations or actual orders were taken from us after seeing IDs. Just a big no for us. Don’t waste your money.

Good views but bad food. We ordered a Cesar salad and fish wrap which was just lettuce and a small piece of fish. I had to get up and fetch the cutlery 🍴 and the sauces whereas the server was was pre occupied. There are much better restaurants in Kona but this is not the one I would recommend for food.

Best breakfast I've had in Kona town. Great view too. Food was fast and my omelet was cooked perfectly. My girlfriend loved her blueberry pancakes and we shared a 1 piece Benedict—hollandaise was delicious. $8 bloodys and lilikoi mimosas. Good coffee but no espresso, however i did see someone bring in there own from the shop next-door. The Hours are INCORRECT on Google. Breakfast from 7:30-10:30 every morning. Lunch menu starts at 10:45am and they serve food till late night too.

We definitely wouldn't be back at this place if we were in Hawaii again. Had SOME tables but was not nearly as busy as other places and just pretty dead. A sign. Was going for a specialty pizza and was all set when, nope, pizza making ends at a certain time. Pizza becomes to hard to make after 9 p.m.... So went with a quick choice while dude stands there and get bland sliders. Will remember to skip this place next time that's for sure. My own reviews often help me down the road.. Not friendly at all here either.

5 star service! Come for the beers (lots on tap!), view and service. They validate parking so park behind. We were here around 1pm on a Tuesday. Pretty empty and vibes were good. We sat upstairs and had fun watching the waves. The Caesar Salad… idk man. Haha Mom loved the Kalua Pork Sliders and my partner thought the burger was okay.

I hate speaking ill of a restaurant, I truly do. I couldn't justify giving this place a 5, it wasn't horrible but left a lot to be desired. We went about 3pm so not much a crowd and it was not our 1st choice, actually 2nd because I didn't want to wait for a table across the way at On the Rocks. Needless to say, I probably should have waited for that table. We got a much better view and service as well as drinks at a hole in the wall bar right after this. Drinks were eh to be honest, service was not spectacular ant the food was not something I could get elsewhere or from the grocery store besides the house made pickles. I don't know you be the judge from the pictures. I used to come here when it was Lulu's and that place was awesome! I miss it!
