A Kona Nightlife Staple

Situated right in the beating heart of Ali'i Drive, Laverne's Big Island Alehouse & Restaurant serves as a go-to anchor for anyone wandering through the seaside village of Kailua-Kona. This isn't a place for hushed whispers; it is a high-energy venue where the sound of clinking glasses often competes with a live band or the roar of fans watching a big game on one of the many wall-mounted screens.

The Flavor of the Big Island

The kitchen leans into hearty, crowd-pleasing fare designed to soak up a few locally brewed pints. You will find staples like their robust half-pound burgers and fresh catch fish tacos that taste like they were plucked straight from the Pacific that morning. The menu focuses on elevated pub grub that hits the spot after a long day of snorkeling or surfing off the Kona coast. The seating layout is sprawling, making it an ideal choice for groups who need space to spread out, though you might find the interior acoustics can get quite boisterous during peak evening hours.

Why Locals and Travelers Stop In

If you are looking for a venue that transitions seamlessly from a sunny afternoon lunch spot to a pulsing nightlife hub, this is your primary destination in West Hawaii. The draft list features a rotation of island-inspired brews, and the open-air design ensures you never lose that tropical breeze. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge finding parking along the main drag, but once you snag a table near the balcony, the view of the Pacific horizon makes the effort well worth it. Whether you are craving a late-night bite or a place to watch the sunset with a cold drink, Laverne's captures that unfiltered, laid-back Kona spirit better than most.

Another stellar visit to Laverne's. The loco moco is by far the best I have had any where in Kona. I am actively trying everyone's loco moco to find what I think is the best. This one is by far the best I have had to date. Service was good despite only one person watching the bar and tables. I will absolutely be back. January 2026. Yet another stellar visit. Different bar tender, great service. Food was served quickly and again, did not disappoint. I will be back again. Highly reccomend. April 2026. Another awesome visit. You guys are killing it.

I enjoyed drinking a beer here and looking out over the bay. I did not order food but they definitely do serve good here.

Haven’t been back since Humpy’s. Bunch of tables weren’t wiped down, so definitely low on staff. No live music on weekdays or at least when we got there at 8. Steamer clams were extremely over salted and my tongue still hurts from the little sauce that I did consume. I should have returned it but didn’t want to be a Karen. Wedge salad is hard to mess up. Seafood pasta was good. The beer I wanted was out. Our bartender was really nice and gave us great service, but I don’t think I will be back, not living up to the old glory days from 4 years ago and also Anchorage AK location.

The bartender wasn’t very friendly and seemed like he didn’t really want to be at work, maybe was just having a bad day. However, the wait staff was welcoming and made friendly conversation. The food was okay, though there are extra charges for almost everything, including a side and sauce which is fine. They were also out of several menu items, so I ended up ordering my third choice. Overall, it’s fine considering there aren’t many dining options in the area. The indoor and outdoor seating are both nice, and it’s pet-friendly, which is a really cool bonus. I would go back for some pupus and drinks if I were in the area.

Bro!!!! The view here... let me get the scene for you. I am sitting at the bar looking out the open windows watching dolphins jumping in the bay. The bartender is a Rockstar, the food is delicious, the drinks are cold and the game is on tv... so basically it's perfection!

Went here for lunch on a weekday. There was ample seating. The views are spectacular! It is right across the road from the ocean. Usually busy with pedestrian on the sidewalk too. There is an upper and lower floor. Both have bars. Service was excellent. Food was very good. We had a burger with bacon and fries.
