L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Kailua-Kona (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy)
About
A Taste of Local Island Comfort
When you find yourself roaming the sun-drenched streets of Kailua-Kona, there is a specific kind of hunger that only a traditional plate lunch can satisfy. L & L Hawaiian Barbeque captures the soul of island comfort food, serving up hearty portions that define the local culinary landscape. The air inside is often thick with the savory, caramelized scent of grilled meats, and you will hear the rhythmic clatter of takeout containers being packed for beach days and long drives up the coast.
What to Expect on Your Plate
The menu is anchored by the classic BBQ Chicken and the savory richness of their signature Chicken Katsu. If you want to eat like a true local, the Loco Moco is the move: a hefty beef patty topped with a fried egg and a generous ladle of brown gravy, served over a mound of white rice and creamy macaroni salad. It is unpretentious, heavy, and exactly what you need after a morning of snorkeling in the Pacific.
The Kailua-Kona Experience
This spot is ideal for those who prioritize flavor over formality. It is the kind of place where you grab your styrofoam box and head straight to the shoreline. A minor heads-up: parking in the area can get a bit tight during the lunch rush as the local foot traffic swells, but the efficiency of the kitchen ensures you aren't waiting long for your meal. Whether you are a visitor looking for an authentic slice of Hawaii’s plantation-era food culture or a resident grabbing a reliable weekday lunch, this establishment remains a staple for quick, satisfying, and carb-heavy island fuel.

Can’t wait to try more!!! We stopped in for mochi donuts but it was hard to say no to all the delicious-looking food. The donuts were absolutely amazing, both the flavors AND the presentation! My daughter ordered s’mores and I got glazed but they made a mistake and gave us cookies and cream and just left it in the box for us. Sweet bonus! My husband and sons were so jealous they missed out so we will definitely be coming back! Yeah—we were so mean and absolutely ate the extra donut and didn’t save any for them LOL

Bingsu fruit quality was good but ice to fruit ratio was off (too much fruits/sauce vs shaved ice thus too sweet compared to the innumerable other bingsu's I've had in the tri-state/mainland area). Ice was also not shaved as fine in comparison. But what really drove my low review was the terrible customer service. Took multiple tries for front register to understand and take my order. Then it took another 45+ mins for my bingsu to come out, during which there was nothing complimentary to compensate for my lost time (sorry to sound entitled but it was FORTY FIVE MINS!! Of my whole family's time!!). My order was changed 3x after I ordered - I ordered strawberry matcha and after 10+ mins was told strawberry "isn't coming out as expected", then I said mango matcha was fine and was told 5? 10? Minutes later they don't have mango. Finally I said fine pineapple works and ultimately that's what I got another 25 mins later, but even then they made a pineapple not pineapple matcha but by then I couldn't be bothered to complain since it was already an hour in and I was rushing for a flight (which I barely made in time btw, last to board after gunning it with hubby and 2 young kids in tow). The ladies at the table next to us who ordered right after us also waited 45+minutes for a small bingsu; they were also visibly annoyed. Tteok-bokki was not spicy at all (my 4yo ate it when she has zero tolerance for heat) which was disappointing. I'm sorry to have to leave a negative review since I really wanted to support a fellow Asian, but my mind was really blown by how terrible the experience was and nothing was proactively done to try and make it better for its customers.

Love this local place. Drinks are good and food is good. Got the Malasadas and the filling was good. Wish it was made fresh though. The matcha is really good since they use ceremonial grade

Great spot for lunch! We had bim bap, beef bowl, bingsu and Ube matcha latte. We enjoyed everything, flavors were good! The staff was great! I would definitely visit again if I’m in the Big Island. Price of items were decent.

I had the spicy pork cubbap bowl with garlic spinach , and a Tiramisu mochi donut. It was delicious. The shop is spotlessly clean, and the treats look amazing. The staff were friendly and even offered me a sample for the spice level. Prices were fair for Kailua-Kona A new neighborhood favorite, looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.

I come here often to grab a quick post workout snack. It’s very convenient because it’s on the way home & parking is easy and free. I’ve tried their bulgogi, spam & egg, and tuna Kimbap — so filling and delicious. I appreciate that it’s a thin layer of rice and lots of actual ingredients. I had their bulgogi protein bowl + added sunny side up egg with a side of Korean mashed potatoes. Absolutely lovely and flavorful. I’ve also had their Korean shave ice. I’m not into super sweet desserts, so I had the sesame one and I really enjoyed it. Totally worth trying this place out!

Tried the spicy pork kimbap and it was delicious. Also tried the bulgogi bowl but it was a little too sweet for my taste. The cucumber kimchi was good though. Wish they made a tuna and kimchi kimbap too!

What a lovely dessert shop! I got an iced mango matcha, and my partner got a cold brew. The store was nice and cool inside, and the staff was polite and kind. We got six mochi donuts to try the ube, matcha, original, haupia, pina colada, and blueberry basil almond flavors on our road trip. The bingsu looks delicious, too!
