A Little Slice of Bangkok in Kailua-Kona

Tucked away near the the Big Island's western coast, Krua Thai Cuisine delivers a no-frills, high-impact dining experience that feels like a quiet discovery for locals and visitors alike. If you are wandering through Kailua-Kona looking for a departure from the typical resort fare, this kitchen captures the bold, punchy essence of street-style Thai cooking.

The Sensory Experience

Stepping inside, you are immediately greeted by the sharp, inviting aroma of bird's eye chilies and freshly pounded garlic hitting a searing hot wok. The interior is refreshingly utilitarian, allowing the food to command your full attention. The kitchen team here favors traditional balancing acts: the pungent kick of fish sauce, the creamy richness of coconut milk, and the refreshing crunch of Thai basil. The Pad See Ew is a standout, arriving with wide rice noodles charred just enough to impart a smoky flavor that lingers on the palate.

What to Expect

This spot serves as a reliable anchor for authentic cravings, especially for those who prefer their curries with an honest, lingering heat. Note that the dining area can get quite lively during the dinner rush, and parking in the immediate vicinity requires a bit of patience due to the popularity of the surrounding Kona commercial area. Whether you are grabbing a quick takeout box to enjoy while watching the sunset at the pier or sitting down for a restorative meal after a day of snorkeling, the kitchen consistently prioritizes depth of flavor over pretense. It is a straightforward, satisfying choice for anyone seeking the real deal in Hawaii’s coastal climate.

Amazing Thai place on the big island. My wife and I went there again because the fried rice was amazing. Spring rolls and Penang curry were good as well along with the Thai tea but the drunken noodles were not as great as the fried rice. Overall highly recommend if you are in Kona.

I found this place on Happy Cow. This place has a large menu with tons of vegan options. Everything marked with a green V can be made vegan. Make sure you tell them and they will do it. I got the vegan Thai tea (made with coconut creamer) and it was delicious and sweet! They were out of boba but those are also vegan. For an appetizer I got the Vegan Basil spring rolls. These were huge! They come in an order of 4 and there is a peanut dipping sauce and a Hoisin sauce on the side with spoons so you can layer the sauces into each bite! I really liked the peanut sauce with these the most. They fall apart near the end of the roll, but they are very fresh and the basil is a really nice flavor. I'm also so happy they don't come with cilantro in them! For my main course I got Pad See Eww (vegan) with tofu and medium spice. This was a large portion and the noodles were cooked perfectly. They weren't too hard or soft. The flavor was great with just a hint of sweetness. I really liked the fried tofu in this dish too. It didn't have a bad sponge texture and had a nice "skin" that was crispy. The medium spice was good, but next time I would get the next level higher. Not every bite was spicy, just the few that had the chili flakes on them so I would get a bit more. Absolutely delicious meal overall and I will have to come back soon! Reservations are recommended during busy lunch and dinner times, especially for big groups. Pros: Well marked vegan options, Large portions, Friendly people

After years of driving by this restaurant, I finally stopped in and found out three important things. There is parking behind their building, their food is delicious and the service is warm and welcoming. The first dish I tried was Sweet and Sour Chicken including Jasmine rice, at a fair price, with fresh pineapple and perfectly cooked veggies swimming in a 5-star sauce. I had Chicken Satay as an appetizer and it was thick, juicy and full of flavor with sides of peanut and cucumber sauce, both beyond tasty. The second visit, I had the Ono over a bed of Asparagus and other veggies with a delectable sauce and a huge plate to hold and display it all. The ring of sauce around the perimeter of the plate and the deliciousness of the fish told me there was a passionate chef involved. What can I say? It took me years to finally try Krua Thai Cuisine, but I did find golden food and service at the end of this restaurant rainbow making it my Kona “go to” Thai food place, from this point on. Do yourself a favor and don’t wait, like I did, to give Krua Thai Cuisine a try. You will be happy you did!

The food was so good! The veggie spring rolls were perfectly thin and crispy, and the basil fried rice tasted fresh with really flavorful vegetables.

Nice place to have a meal. Dong yum soup with rice noodles is so good. Mango sticky rice was sold out this time:( will definitely try it next time.

Table for two, we were near the window and the AC was blocked by a wall so it was warmish. We ordered lunch specials veggie with chicken, pad thai with tofu and panang curry with beef. All had rice and salad. We requested mild. It was pretty good. The mango dessert with sticky rice was market rate $15 so we didn't get it. The Thai tea with choice of half and half or coconut milk didn't really taste differently. We just paid cash to avoid 3% credit card fee when we were approached again to pay by another waitress, communication error.

The best place to enjoy food with flavors and a warm and loving service that has consistent taste, experience and price. It is totally worth it and If you are Thai food fan don’t miss this place. We tried lot of dishes as we went like a party of 8 people and everyone loved the food.

Great Thai spot. Really liked the Lard Nar, a very unique dish in a delicious gravy. The pad thai was very good, though not too vegetable-heavy. The Panang Curry was also good, though so rich and heavy. Huge portions for decent prices. Good ambience and service. Visited a few times during our trip for the clearly labeled vegan options and solid value. A solid choice for Thai food!

Absolutely loved this place. Perfect taste portion and spice level! Couldn’t recommend more. Every dish we ordered was delicious. One of the best Thai food we had in Kona. If possible we would want to come again. We went during late lunch hours but they were happy to accommodate. Since we were running late we placed order on the phone and by the time we reached there lunch was almost ready . Staff was friendly. The fresh rolls were huge. Biggest we had till date. Wings can be cooked better. But still they were nice. Panang curry and fried rice were the best of best. Must try place ! Thanks to the chef !
