Savoring Pacific Flavors at the Water’s Edge
Positioned right along the breezy Ali'i Drive strip, Kona Sunset Cafe captures the laid-back rhythm of Kailua-Kona. This isn't a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a casual, open-air spot where the salt air mingles with the scent of searing ahi and freshly brewed Kona coffee. You will likely hear the rhythmic crashing of the tide against the volcanic rock while local musicians often set a mellow tone for the afternoon.
The Island Kitchen Approach
The menu leans heavily into local provenance. Their signature poke bowls feature daily catch sourced directly from Big Island fishing boats, providing a texture that is firm and buttery compared to mainland varieties. If you find yourself here during the late afternoon, the guava-glazed ribs are the go-to order—sweet, sticky, and best enjoyed with a chilled glass of local craft beer. Portions are generous, reflecting the hearty appetites of both kama'aina and visitors.
A Local Observation
While the views are arguably the best in the district, keep in mind that the shaded terrace fills up rapidly as the sun begins its descent. If you plan on catching the legendary Hawaiian golden hour, arrive early. Parking in the surrounding Kailua-Kona village stalls can get tight during peak tourist season, so a short walk through the historic waterfront area is often the best strategy to secure a spot before your meal.
Why You’ll Stay
Kona Sunset Cafe is ideal for travelers who want to skip the resort-style formalities and dive straight into authentic island life. It is unpolished and vibrant, serving as the perfect refueling station after a day of snorkeling or hiking the rugged Kona coastline. Whether you are grabbing a quick breakfast wrap or settling in for an evening of pupus and conversation, the atmosphere remains effortlessly grounded.

Most awkward place to walk into. It's an old school arcade for adults. When my family and I walked in, we asked if they were serving food the guy said the chef was sick.

Staff was nice. Food was terrible. I think they are really adult gaming with a little food and not the other way around.

Burrito had a hair in it even tho old dude was bald🤨 smoothie was more like a milkshake. slot machines going while pbs kids is on... the place was not a mf sunset cafe but a vegas chuck e cheese

Enjoyed a few hours here with some books and tarot from the cute bookstore next door. The French dip sandwich was delicious and VERY filling, my bestie absolutely MURDERED her portobello sammie. The smoothies were so delicious, we actually ordered a 3rd to share. We finished with honey beignets, which were delicious perfections. The people here were friendly and just good people. Will definitely return!

Food wasn't good they didn’t even have the food in the pictures, when we got there they had a different menu and so small, service was bad !!! I don’t know why the girls has attitude when we came right in the door, the guy sitting down even told them that they should be greeting us and doing their job. Food also came out one plate at a time (10-15 minutes each time) we were the only ones there besides another table with 1 person!!!

Went there because the food on the website looked so good. But when we got there, they said that was the menu from the old owners. The menu they did have was small, they didn’t have caramel for the latte, and they brought out one plate at a time. The food wasn’t that good and was pretty bland. The service also wasn’t great. First, they didn’t great us. We walked in and the girl at the counter just stared at us, so I asked her if we just seat ourselves. She replied, “you order at the counter and then have a seat”. Then when we were ordering, they didn’t know the menu at all and had to keep asking the owner. Most of the meals don’t come with a side or a drink, you have to pay extra. Some items did come with a side or at least a drink though. Definitely should have read the reviews first.
