Straight from the Pacific to Your Plate

When you are navigating the sun-drenched streets of Kailua-Kona, Kona Seafood Market serves as the go-to destination for those who want their fish treated with respect. This isn't a place for white tablecloths or complex sauces; it is a raw, honest operation focused entirely on the quality of the catch. The scent of salt air mingles with the clean, briny aroma of freshly processed ahi and ono the moment you step toward the counter.

Locally Sourced, Expertly Cut

The display cases showcase the true bounty of the Big Island waters. Locals know that if you want the best sashimi-grade tuna or firm, flaky swordfish, this is where you go before the best cuts are claimed. The fishmongers behind the counter possess a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the daily haul, often guiding visitors toward whatever came off the boat that morning. Whether you are planning a backyard grill session or just looking to assemble a premium poke bowl at home, the texture and color of the offerings speak for themselves.

A Quick Note for Visitors

Be prepared for a no-frills experience. The space is compact and utilitarian, designed for efficient service rather than lingering. Parking can get a little tight near the bustling commercial stretch, so keep an eye out as you pull in. It is a humble, hardworking shop that remains a staple for Kailua-Kona residents who prioritize freshness above all else. If you are serious about preparing authentic island-style seafood, skip the supermarket and head straight to the source where the connection between the fisherman and the kitchen is clear and direct.

Local fresh fish! When we arrived, they were a bit busy accepting a fresh catch out of an iced cooler. They weighed them and they went straight to the cooler...not to be confused with a freezer (didn't look like they had one). John, the owner, has serveral fresh poke offerings and literally the catch of the day. We bought a book match pair of perfectly trimmed striped marlin (bill fish like swordfish) Light marinade in the teriyaki seasoning they sell. Asian slaw and asparagus sides. Absolutely wonderful! ETA: They also have a booth at the Waimea Farmer's market.

Walking into a warm poke shop should have been enough to turn me around, but I wanted to try this place. I’m disappointed; the poke is stringy with questionable black specs in it. I lost my appetite and $20.

Kona Seafood Market is the real deal. We picked up about eight pounds of shrimp and every bit of it was excellent—fresh, clean, and exactly what you hope for when you buy seafood in a place like Kona. You can tell right away the quality is there. What really stood out though was the staff. Everyone was incredibly friendly and easy to talk to, the kind of local spot where you feel welcome the moment you walk in. They answered questions, helped us get exactly what we needed, and clearly take pride in what they sell. Great product, great people. If you want quality seafood in Kona, this place delivers. We’ll definitely be back.

Great poke experienced and very friendly guy behind the counter. However the guy behind the counter seemed to be disorganized especially when finding clean dishes and knives to use. He definitely prefers to be out fishing rather than being behind the counter.

We purchased a whole fish from here for myself to cook with As a Chef, I'm always looking for new fish I haven't worked with before) The service was great, she took her time to show us all the different fish they had on offer, the flavours of each of them and how best to cook them! We enjoyed our fish laster that night, what a great place for amazingly fresh seafood!

Wow! What a great shopping experience! The young sales lady on Christmas Day was very knowledgeable about all the fresh caught seafood, and offered helpful tips for preparing it. So friendly and nice. She answered all of our questions, and we had a lot of them. We cooked it at our hotel and it was absolutely delicious!

Very very very fresh! Total worth the price. 1 poke bowl is $17 (small). If you would like to get fish for cooking, this is the place. We didnt have time to do so and got the poke bowl instead, which was great! It came with a side - they only had kimchi when we were there. I would come back here for more.
