A Sunset Tradition on the Kona Coast

Stepping onto the lanai at the Kona Inn Restaurant feels like a transition into a bygone era of old Hawaii. Located right along the historic Ali’i Drive, this oceanfront landmark remains the premier spot in Kailua-Kona to watch the sky turn brilliant shades of violet and orange as the sun dips below the Pacific horizon.

Vintage Charm Meets Island Flavors

The architecture pays homage to the original 1928 hotel, maintaining a classic, plantation-era aesthetic that you won’t find in modern resorts. The atmosphere is open-air and breezy; you will hear the rhythmic crashing of the tide against the seawall throughout your meal. It is a space designed for slow, multi-course dinners where conversation flows as easily as the cocktails.

Signature offerings focus on fresh, local ingredients. Many visitors gravitate toward the macadamia nut-crusted catch of the day or the prime rib, a long-standing favorite for those who appreciate traditional, hearty island comfort food. The Mai Tais are iconic here, served with a generous pour that pairs perfectly with the salt air.

Know Before You Go

While the view is unparalleled, the popularity of this Kailua-Kona institution means the dining room can get quite energetic during peak sunset hours. It’s the kind of place where the staff treat the service like a choreographed performance. Keep in mind that parking along the main drag can be a bit of a puzzle during busy weekends, so arriving early enough to stroll through the nearby Kona Inn Shopping Village is a smart move. Whether you are celebrating a milestone or just seeking a quintessential Big Island evening, the blend of nostalgia and ocean scenery makes this a mandatory stop for any traveler passing through the heart of town.

Beautiful oceanside restaurant with amazing seafood and tasteful local dishes. The tables near the ocean are amazing however the blindingly bright lights at night are a bit much and dimming them would create a lovely atmosphere. The service is good but a bit slow as a result of the restaurant's popularity. Regardless of anything else, I've been twice before and will absolutely be back.

Wow, what can I say. The location is like none other, the food was amazing, the live band was one of the best I have ever heard. The wait for our dinner was pretty long but we enjoyed ourselves with the atmosphere, great music, drinks and good conversation. I was pleasantly surprised about the restaurant a friend picked with it being her first time to the Big Island. GREAT CHOICE! A wonderful experience and a restaurant I will return to my next trip with family.

When in Kona Hawaii make one of your lunch dates at the Kona inn historic restaurant. Amazing views of the ocean. You don't want to miss the ambiance. Great for families and dates and those looking for a quiet Hawaiian experience for lunch or dinner. On the way in look up and check out the historic large fish World record catches on the wall. Once you sit down, you'll never want to leave. A great Island experience in a 100 plus year old building on the ocean.

I've been coming to the Kona Inn since 2018 every year and love the Mai Tais. I bring all my friends and family here for food and drinks. Recently Taylor, Marcus, Eric, Mikayla, Lydia, Ashley, and Cody have created a wonderful experience for me this year. Keep the Mia Tais and live music!! Aloha

We had a fabulous lunch at Kona Inn on our last day in Kona. It's a beautiful, open-air space with a nice view of the ocean. Our server Keana was excellent, made us feel very welcome and helped us with our menu choices. My wife had the Baked Monchong, which is apparently only available on a limited basis, and it was excellent. I had the Calamari Sandwich (pictured) which was HUGE, and the best, tenderest calamari I've ever had. Our grandchildren were satisfied with their mac & cheese and chicken tenders. Our only minor snag was the host at the front desk, who was AWOL until we asked a bartender to chase him down. Overall this was a great experience. definitely the best meal we had in Kona.

One of the Kona classics, worth a visit, in the heart of the main road through Kona. We enjoyed a fish meal & post Thanksgiving turkey sliders (with cranberry) - with great, crispy fries! Beautiful property, next to a grassy area, and the ocean. The restr design is Open-air, lovely, with Hawaiian decor. Worth a visit, enjoy a cold (strong), tasty drink! Buon apetito & Cheers! 🥂

I revisited this restaurant for the first time in 12 years. It’s located right on the beach, and the open-air atmosphere with the sea breeze is very relaxing and comfortable. The view is beautiful (though it's hard to see the ocean once the sun goes down!). The staff were also very hospitable and welcoming. The menu features a lot of fish dishes prepared in creative ways. The unique, flat-shaped fried calamari was particularly delicious. They also have a kids' menu with options like hot dogs, which is helpful for families.

I'll add this to the maybe 5 or 6 reviews I've already posted. I love this place. If you would like to love this place too, go there! You most likely will not be disappointed. However I'm pretty sure there are people that no matter where they go, will always be disappointed! Be happy! Aloha

After reading some reviews we decided to give this place a try. We were able to get seating quick on a weeknight for a late dinner. Entrance was nice and inviting and views with nice ocean breeze was great. That said, the food was just average, and the overall interior felt a bit dated. I wasn’t a fan of the old furniture and dark carpets—removing those could really freshen up the space.
