Kona Canoe Club
About
A Front-Row Seat to the Pacific
Perched right above the surf along the historic Ali'i Drive, Kona Canoe Club serves as a casual anchor for those wandering through the heart of Kailua-Kona. The open-air architecture invites the salt air directly to your table, often accompanied by the rhythmic crashing of waves against the seawall below. It is the kind of place where the transition from sun-drenched afternoon to golden hour happens seamlessly, usually with a cold drink in hand.
Island Classics with a View
The menu leans heavily into local comfort favorites. Signature items like the fresh-caught island fish or their substantial half-pound burgers are designed for post-beach appetites. You will find that the kitchen prioritizes approachable, hearty portions that mirror the laid-back tempo of the Big Island. The decor leans into the nautical heritage of the Kona coast, featuring weathered wood and memorabilia that honor the legacy of outrigger paddling in these waters.
Things to Know Before You Go
If you are looking for a quiet, intimate hideaway, this is likely not it; the space is energetic and open, frequently buzzing with the chatter of tourists and locals alike. Parking along the main coastal strip can be a bit of a hunt during the peak dinner rush, so consider arriving early to snag a spot. It is an ideal venue for groups who want to experience the casual, vibrant pulse of Kona town without the stuffiness of a formal dining room. When the sun dips below the horizon, the shifting colors over the water provide a natural backdrop that remains the true highlight of the visit.

Great service. We sat by the railing and watched canoes and sailboats and had drinks and wings. Great view.

Atmosphere was great. Food was terrible. Waitress said they were in the middle of buyout and redoing their menu. My wife got the nachos and they were probably the only thing okay to eat. Daughter got Mac n cheese and it was regular Kraft but they decided to add extra cheese to it and it made it worse. Son got tacos and he said they were too greasy. The worst thing of all was the calamari burger. I was expecting fresh calamari but it was a frozen patty that was deep fried and folded on a bun. It made me sick later that night. If you want a place to get drinks and be on the ocean this is a great place for that. I strongly discourage anyone from eating their until they have their menu updated.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! Took two hours to get food with zero taste, you would be better off going literally anywhere else, the floor tastes better! The server forgot about us for an hour! The cook took a break for beer while we had already been waiting for an hour and a half. The check took forever too. Everything about this place was horrible. Do not go here if you want to have any bit of joy after lunch.

Had a great lunch. Sliders and potato salad while sitting on the patio with a great view of the bay. There was a great breeze and friendly staff.

Great quiet views of the bay! This place is tucked away within a shopping area so it is easy to miss but I am so glad we found it. It was a relaxing location to sit for dinner after the sunset. I had the Mahi Mahi fish and chips. It was all good and so we're the pina coladas.

Just a quick stop while shopping. Sat at the bar during happy hour and had a couple of margaritas. They were good, the view was nice on a rainy day and the service was quick. Margarita was delicious.

Walked around on the first night of our honeymoon after a long flight and found this gem. Had a drink and dinner while watching the sunset. Would 100% recommend

Pros: 1. on the water 2. My virgin piña colada was good, but I could tell it was basically something from a package so not a lot could go wrong. Cons: 1. All the food we had zero flavor!!!! 2. Cheese had to be the cheapest cheese all it was grease. 3. The beef on the nachos must’ve been cooked in a crockpot or something cause it absolutely had zero flavor and was super mushy. 4. The pulled pork sliders were basically another cheap piece of meat just a bunch of fat and it wasn’t soaked in the barbecue. It was basically drizzled with the barbecue sauce so it really wasn’t a barbecue pulled pork slider and it was absolutely disgusting. I don’t know what kind of barbecue sauce they use, but it was disgusting.. 5. The guacamole was basically mushed up avocado had no flavor except for what avocado taste like that was super disappointing and the soul they provided tasted like it might’ve been like Walmart brand straight out of a can absolutely disgusting. that’s actually putting down Walmart because I’ve had better Walmart salsa at a front house. 100% would not recommend- for what you paid for this and for what you get to eat is so not worth it. You’re better off eating at McDonald’s that’s how bad it was.

Wonderful view and food. I recommend trying to get there a little before sunset. There are about a half dozen tables right along the edge of the patio that give an unobstructed view of the bay and sunset. However, of you can't get one of those tables pretty much most of the restaurant has a view of the ocean.

Kona Canoe Club offers a historic dining experience with oceanfront views. It is a notable spot for both locals and visitors. Ambiance and Views: The restaurant’s open-air setting provides unobstructed views of the ocean and stunning sunsets. The atmosphere is charming and romantic. Menu Highlights: Seafood is a prominent feature of the menu, with fresh fish sourced daily from local fishermen. For dessert, the Kona Inn Mud Pie is a standout choice. Service and Pricing: The restaurant is on the pricier side, but the cost is justified by the quality of food and the exceptional views. Overall, the Kona Canoe Club offers a memorable dining experience, especially for those looking to enjoy fresh seafood in a historic, oceanfront setting.
