Island Flavors on the Big Island

Tucked away in the heart of Kailua-Kona, Kona Barbeque brings a straightforward, no-frills approach to the classic Hawaiian plate lunch. This is where locals go when they want satisfying, flame-grilled proteins without the pretense of a high-end resort dinner. The scent of charred teriyaki sauce and hickory smoke greets you the moment you step toward the counter, cutting through the salty sea air of the Pacific.

The Signature Plate Lunch Experience

The menu centers on traditional island staples. Their beef teriyaki is the main event—thinly sliced, marinated in a sweet-savory glaze, and fired until the edges crisp up perfectly. Served alongside two generous scoops of sticky white rice and a scoop of creamy macaroni salad, it’s a meal designed to fuel you for a day of snorkeling at Kahalu’u or hiking the nearby lava fields. The portion sizes are substantial, reflecting the local appetite for hearty, comforting food.

What to Expect in Kona Town

The atmosphere is casual and brisk. You won’t find white tablecloths here; instead, you get plastic trays and the lively hum of lunchtime chatter from residents on their midday break. It’s a tight, efficient space, so be prepared for a quick turnaround during the peak lunch hour when the line can stretch toward the door. If you’re grabbing takeout, the containers are packed tight—a perfect companion for a sunset beach picnic. Don't be surprised if you have to hunt briefly for a parking spot in the bustling commercial plazas nearby, but the smoky reward of a well-prepared plate lunch makes the short search well worth the effort.

We paid $45 for the pound of grilled abalone with the garlic butter, and it was SO worth it! My entire family enjoyed it. I recommend asking for the spice caddy. They won't offer it unless you ask for it. Enjoy!

Big Island Abalone is a unique aquaculture farm located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, specializing in premium abalone. They offer a variety of experiences, including a food truck serving freshly prepared abalone dishes and a DIY barbecue area called Kona Barbeque. We visited the food truck without a reservation and enjoyed a set that included both oysters and abalone. The staff was incredibly friendly and made our experience enjoyable. Both the abalone and oysters were fresh and delicious. Wanderlog For those interested in the Kona Barbeque experience, it's important to note that reservations are required. This self-grilling BBQ area allows guests to cook their own meals using locally sourced ingredients, including abalone, lobster, shrimp, oysters, beef, and vegetables. The venue provides all necessary equipment, such as grills, utensils, and tableware. Reservations can be made online, and it's recommended to book at least 48 hours in advance. Overall, Big Island Abalone offers a memorable culinary experience that combines fresh seafood with interactive dining. Whether you're stopping by the food truck or planning a BBQ, it's a must-visit spot for seafood lovers.😍

What a fun and different experience, Rayen was a friendly and gracious host and made sure we were happy and well taken care of. Food was prepped and ready for us to grill & included abalone, lobster, shrimp, chicken and steak - so much food we had to take some home. They provide sinks, towels, seasonings, utensils, plates and flatware; you can buy drinks onsite or bring your own which we did. This was a great addition to our abalone farm tour and I highly recommend you try it out. Yes it’s outdoors and can get quite hot but the entire area is shaded and open enough for air to blow thru which helps a lot.

They are still building their BBQ part. Provide you a grill and you purchase different grilling packages. They give you seasonings but you need lemon, butter salt to go with your lobster, shrimp and other shell fi

My son's a chef and we were celebrating a teenage birthday. Tried a risk on this new service and it was great. All the tools and seasonings and this great mango sauce. They Taught him how to cut and grill everything. Easy to find location. This is great! Highly recommend! We did it all in about 90 mins
