A Taste of Bangkok on the Big Island

Tucked away near the bustling coastline of Kailua-Kona, Kiri Thai offers a refreshing departure from the usual seaside fare. The space is unassuming, favoring efficiency and bright, clean lines over elaborate decor. It is the kind of spot where the scent of kaffir lime and scorched chili oil hits you the moment you step through the doorway, cutting through the salty island breeze.

Signature Spices and Local Favorites

The kitchen leans into the bold, uncompromising heat of traditional Thai profiles. Regulars swear by the Pad Kee Mao—the drunken noodles—which carry a satisfying char from the wok, balancing the aggressive spice with a subtle, sweet undertone of basil. Their green curry is another staple, thick with coconut cream and packed with crisp, fresh vegetables that retain a satisfying snap. If you prefer a lighter touch, the papaya salad provides a sharp, acidic crunch that acts as a perfect palate cleanser against the humidity of the Kona afternoons.

The Kona Dining Experience

Kiri Thai is ideal for those who prefer their meals without the fuss of white-tablecloth service. It serves as a go-to for locals grabbing a quick, flavorful lunch or visitors needing a spicy reset after a long day of snorkeling. Keep in mind that the interior acoustics can get quite lively during the dinner rush, so it is better suited for casual conversation than intimate whispers. Parking in this part of town requires a bit of patience during peak tourist seasons, but the efficiency of the service ensures that turnover is quick. Whether you are craving the comfort of a rich, aromatic broth or the intensity of a well-balanced stir-fry, this kitchen delivers a genuine slice of Southeast Asian culinary tradition right here in Hawaii.

This is by far the best Thai restaurant I’ve tried on the Big Island. The food is very flavorful, made with fresh ingredients, simply delicious! I had the Eggplant Basil stir fry - very generous with the amount of veggies. Can’t wait to go back and try other dishes on the menu!

Authentic, Fresh, and Warmly Welcoming — A Must-Try in Kailua Kona! We had dinner at Kiri Thai last night and were absolutely blown away. This family-owned restaurant delivers the kind of authentic Thai flavors that instantly took us back to our travels in Thailand. Every dish was beautifully balanced — light and fresh, yet full of depth and complexity. I ordered the local mahi mahi with green curry, and it was perfection — tender fish in a silky, vibrant sauce with just the right amount of spice. My partner had the pineapple curry with pork (since they were sold out of mango), and it was equally delicious — bright, comforting, and layered with flavor. As a double win, they have 4 different local beers from Ola Brewing on tap! Best beer we’ve had in Hawaii…. Ever. Our server, Maya, was incredibly gracious and kind, even though we arrived about 40 minutes before closing, right after what looked like a busy dinner rush. She made us feel completely welcome and never rushed. It’s rare to find a place that combines authentic flavor, fresh local ingredients, and such genuine hospitality. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Kailua Kona! 🌺

We came here and the food was so good that we actually got take out the next day as well. The first day we dined in and everything was fresh and came out in a timely manner. The restaurant is fairly small so keep that in mind if you want to take a larger group. The only minor issue we had was that there was lipstick stain on one of the wine glasses that we received. Which they gave us not just a new clean glass but a whole new pour and bottle of wine. Other than that everything was chefs kiss.

A laid back Thai spot with delicious food, and amazing service! The Thai Iced Tea is delicious! I ordered medium heat on the basil leaves with chicken dish and I wish I had gone hotter but i was very happy with my dish! Delish!! 😋😋

Our waitress was prompt, sweet, and made sure that we had everything we needed! Service was impeccable. The food though? Let’s get this straight. I was blown out of the water. The larb had a wonderful spicy and tangy flavour to it. The ground pork was perfectly cooked and the herbs added beautiful Thai overtones. I’ve never had anything like it before! We also had the crispy duck. Perfectly crispy and ultra juicy. The sauce was a tad sweet but also savoured in umami. The Pad Kee Mao was exactly what I had expected based on the other orders. Purely delicious. Definitely worth the $5 squid add-on, as they piled the dish with the protein! We also had the mango sticky rice at the end. Tasted like other Thai restaurants in Canada, so therefore, a perfect recipe! Overall, we’ll definitely be back. Loved it here! Such a nice break from all the other touristy foods I’ve had lately!

Reasonable priced, delicious Thai food. Small restaurant with good service (hard to find these days). Lunch specials on weekdays. Everything we ordered was excellent. The veggies were cooked to perfection, spice level perfect (they as you, mild, med or very spicy. We will be back and recommend to friends and family.
