A Taste of the Himalayas Beside the Pacific

Stepping into Kamana Kitchen puts the scent of toasted cumin and warm garlic naan at the forefront of your Kailua-Kona experience. Located right along the bustling Alii Drive, this spot brings a distinct Himalayan influence to the Big Island’s culinary landscape. The interior feels grounded and unpretentious, offering a welcome change of pace from the typical tourist-heavy waterfront dining.

Signature Spice and Culinary Craft

The menu leans heavily into traditional North Indian techniques, with a notable dedication to the art of the clay tandoor oven. Regulars often gravitate toward the Chicken Tikka Masala, which arrives with a balanced, creamy tomato gravy that begs to be mopped up with an extra order of freshly baked garlic naan. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the Lamb Vindaloo carries a sharp, tangy bite that cuts through the tropical humidity of Kailua-Kona.

The Local Kona Experience

Dining here is best suited for those who appreciate a slower, flavorful meal after a long day of snorkeling or surfing. The seating transitions from a casual indoor arrangement to a view of the ocean breeze, though be prepared for the ambient noise of the Alii Drive traffic—it is a lively area, and the proximity to the road adds a raw, urban energy to your dinner. Service is efficient, though the pace is definitively "island time," allowing you to linger over your mango lassi without feeling rushed by the staff. Whether you are a local resident looking for a robust curry or a visitor seeking a spice-forward departure from traditional Hawaiian plate lunches, this kitchen delivers consistent, heart-warming comfort food.

Food was ok but the waiter had absolutely no people skills. He made us feel like we were intruding. My wife asked a question after we ordered and handed him the menu and all he did was hand the menu back rather than answer the question. Like I said food was ok but I will not go back because of the service and unwelcoming atmosphere . There was an older man and woman that were attentive and nice but certainly not our waiter.

Great Indian food on the Island! The Kadai Paneer was the perfect blend of spice and aroma. The naan could have been a bit crisper as I had requested, but overall, everything was delicious. The location is convenient, set within a shopping complex, and you can enjoy your food here and after meal beverages with a nice view next door. Prices and portion sizes are very reasonable — definitely worth a visit!

Hands down the best option for Indian food in the Kona area. There was parking close to the place. It was hard to locate right away . The server looked like a seasoned restaurant staff - seated us quickly and took our orders without writing down. He memorized the orders and we got the food we wanted with no mistakes. Butter chicken, malai kofta, onion kulcha, garlic naan, tandoori chicken - everything was just we hoped for after the travel and few days of not getting Indian food. Would definitely recommend if you are in Kona and are craving Indian food!

This was hands down the worst Indian food I've ever had. If there were an option for negative stars, I'd give them. We ordered chicken biryani and chicken curry and both were disasters. The biryani came with rice in clumps, colored with food dye instead of real spice. The chicken tasted frozen and reheated, and the entire dish lacked salt and any real flavor. The chicken curry was no better. The gravy was watered down, with just a few tiny pieces of chicken floating in it, and again there was no salt, no depth of flavor, and nothing resembling real spice. I even asked for spicy and still got something completely bland and soupy. The raita was laughable, served in less than half a tiny bowl. Traditionally, biryani comes with onions and lime on the side, but here we were given a sad mix of lettuce, carrot, and cucumber, which made no sense at all. On top of the bad food, the service was poor. The staff felt inattentive and uninterested, and the tables were sticky, which only made the experience worse. What's even more shocking is how far this food is from authentic Indian cooking. The owners are Nepali, so maybe that's why the food doesn't taste remotely like Indian cuisine. Either way, calling this "Indian food" is misleading. We came in after seeing good reviews and left wondering if those reviewers have ever actually eaten authentic Indian food, because this was nothing close. The ambience is only passable because of the beach view, but otherwise there is nothing exceptional here. If you value your time, money, or taste buds, skip this place.

This place was our first stop after we landed on the island. We stopped by for lunch and also ordered take out for dinner. We had the veggie appetizer plate, veggie thali and mango lassi. The food was delicious. We enjoyed the ocean views. The staff were friendly. Parking was tricky to find. The free street parking was full and the paid garages were too expensive.

Food leaves you wanting more! Samosas, Malai kofta curry and naan... I can literally have it everyday here at Kamana's kitchen. Fish curry was okay. Plain rotis, kali dal were good and so was the plain rice. Quick & friendly service, Ambience is filled with breeze and clashing waves.

Good food and friendly service. Enjoy while sitting outside, listening to the, sound of the waves and a very beautiful view of the ocean. If you can, try to avoid parking in the garage as it is pretty expensive compared to the free Street parking you can find nearby.

Having recently moved to the area from the mainland, you know you're going to be giving up some restaurant variety. Yet we held out hope that we could still get some excellent Indian food. There aren't many Indian restaurants in Kona, but all you need is one good spot! Thank goodness Kamana Kitchen is here to fill that need for visitors and kamaʻāina alike! Not only were the entrees spot on (paneer tikka masala and matar paneer), but the garlic naan and kheer (rice pudding) were among the best we've had anywhere (including two trips to India!) As for the atmosphere.... Hands down the best of any Indian restaurant we've ever been to - it's right at the beach where you can stare at the beautiful water and palm trees as you listen to the waves crash. It's simply stunning! If you're in need of some delicious Indian food and you're in the area, you can't go wrong checking out Kamana.

Food here is very good. We had the Palak Paneer, Paneer Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan and Butter Naan. Everything was great. Flavors were on point. Service was quick and the staff was very friendly too. Did we mention that with outdoor seating and facing the ocean, the views were great too. All in all a great experience!
