Island Ono Loa Grill
About
A Taste of Kailua-Kona Authenticity
Tucked away near the bustling center of Kailua-Kona, Island Ono Loa Grill serves as a reminder that the best meals in Hawaii often come from modest storefronts. This isn't fine dining; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense spot where the scent of charred meat and teriyaki sauce greets you the moment you walk through the door. The interior is humble and functional, designed for locals grabbing a quick bite and visitors looking to skip the tourist-trap menus.
Signature Island Flavors
The kitchen is best known for its generous portions of traditional plate lunches. The Kalua pork is a standout, slow-cooked until it falls apart, carrying just the right hint of smokiness. Their teriyaki chicken is another menu staple, characterized by a savory-sweet glaze that balances perfectly with two scoops of sticky white rice and a side of creamy macaroni salad—the quintessential Hawaiian lunch experience. Everything is cooked to order, so don't be surprised if the kitchen hums with a steady, busy energy while you wait.
Practical Dining Notes
While the food delivers on flavor, be prepared for the reality of Kona parking, which can get tight during peak lunch hours. The atmosphere is loud, energetic, and unapologetically casual, making it an ideal pit stop after a morning of snorkeling or exploring the Big Island coast. If you are looking for white tablecloths, look elsewhere, but if you want honest, locally-inspired comfort food served without pretension, this is a cornerstone of the Kailua-Kona dining scene.

The Volcano burger with onion rings was very good! It was a good kind of spicy. Highly recommend it!

My brother recommended that we eat at Ono Loa Grill. We are glad that he did. I had an Applewood smoked bacon cheeseburger and pineapple coleslaw. My wife had a Chicago dog and the pineapple coleslaw as well. We got there early to no lines, but later in the day there are long lines but it is well worth the wait. I can honestly say that it was the best cheeseburger that I've ever had. I've never tried pineapple coleslaw before this, but I've gained what is surely an eternal craving for it. The staff were exceptionally kind and gracious too. It's a wonderful place to eat. If we had an Ono Loa Grill in the contiguous states, we would drive hours just to eat there.

The "loco moco" was ono, and burgers are tasty. They use grass fed beef from kuahiwi Ranc in ka'u. My Family and I love it and we're from south kona side...

This was one of the best places we ate at last week. The bbq burger melted in your mouth, French fries were crispy and I got a side of pineapple coleslaw 🤌. I wish the slaw was a bit more saucy but I still ate it. It is one of my favorite things in hawaii.

I am from Nebraska which is the “Beef State” and haven’t found a burger this good anywhere in the Midwest. We come back to Kona specifically for this place! Onion rings are the best you’ll find too, and the spicy sauce on the Kona Dog cannot be beat!

After looking through multiple other places, we decided to check out Island Ono Loa Grill - and boy am I glad we did. I ordered the Cheeseburger with sides of coleslaw and macaroni salad. The burger arrived open-faced with a generous supply of delicious pickles. The meat though.. wonderful! They advertise never frozen and always fresh/cooked to order and they do not disappoint. I was genuinely shocked at how tasty this burger was. Each time I took a break to eat some of the delicious sides (probably the best coleslaw I had on the island and the macaroni salad really hit the spot) and then came back to burger, it hit all the right taste buds again and again. I can’t wait to return to the island and get another taste of these amazing burgers! The lady working the register (might have been the owner?) was also very kind and brought our food over without the need to use the buzzer they give you to indicate your order is ready (much appreciated). I’m not sure if they use A/C in the summer months, but for January they have the doors open and it’s comfortable enough. There are tables outside as well - some of them shaded and can sit 5-6 people. Parking can be found on the street or out back in the paid lots. There are plenty of paid parking spots and this establishment does validate for up to 90 minutes - so that’s super awesome! If you come here for a fresh burger, you won’t regret it.

Solid lunch place right in a convenient location-- we stopped in for lunch on a whim and were happy with what we ordered. Unfortunately they were out of the item I originally wanted to order (the macnut pesto goat cheese burger), but the bacon cheeseburger I did order was solid-- good flavor and well portioned. The fries were really great! My girlfriend's loco moco was also good. The gravy was flavorful and the patties were well cooked. I'm not a huge macaroni salad fan, but my girlfriend said it was good! Overall this place isn't a must visit in my book, but I'd be happy to come back if I stayed nearby again.

Nice hole in the wall restaurant. Freshly cooked food! The fish tacos were delicious and the spicy sauce it comes with hits the spot. The Macnut hamburger patty and pesto goats cheese sauce was also really good but the bun was a bit of a let down. It was a bit too soft (and slightly sweetish?) and got soggy pretty quickly. Same with the chicken burger. The patty and gravy were epic but bun was soft and got soggy quick. Lovely friendly service and she gave us good food suggestions! Definitely worth a pit stop for a quick meal!
