Ikkyu Ramen
About
A Hidden Noodle Haven in Kona
Stepping into Ikkyu Ramen feels less like a typical restaurant visit and more like stumbling upon a quiet lunch spot in a back alley of Tokyo. Tucked away in a compact commercial strip within the heart of Kailua-Kona, this humble eatery focuses on the essentials: broth, noodles, and patience. The space is modest, often buzzing with the localized energy of regulars who skip the tourist-heavy waterfront to grab a steaming bowl of Tonkotsu.
The Craft of the Bowl
The kitchen at Ikkyu takes its craft seriously, focusing on long-simmered pork bone broth that carries a creamy, opaque depth. You will hear the rhythmic chopping of green onions and the hiss of the steam wand before you see your order arrive. Their signature Tan Tan Men offers a spicy, nutty profile that cuts through the tropical humidity of the Big Island, while the classic Shoyu remains a reliable standard for those seeking a cleaner, savory profile. The noodles possess that essential, firm snap—a detail often lost in larger, more commercial establishments.
Know Before You Go
There is a specific cadence to dining here; seating is limited, and during the peak lunch rush, the room can get quite loud with the sound of slurping and conversation. Parking can be a bit of a tight squeeze in the adjacent lot, so expect to navigate around other vehicles as you pull in. It is a no-frills environment where the focus stays strictly on the bowl in front of you. If you are exploring the Kona side and craving something beyond poke or acai, this is the destination for a genuine, high-quality Japanese comfort meal.

Food was excellent. Perfect for a late evening meal. Service was great and food arrived quickly. We were also entertained by the owner's little girl, who came to our table to speak to us and show us her candy. Highly recommend the Black Garlic Oil Tonkotsu Ramen, although all the food we ordered was excellent.

Vey good ramen and service! Not too salty like other restaurants and the cha siu is pan fried super tasty. The portion is big enough more than an adults. Service and communication is smooth and comfortable. Better than some other noodle restaurants I’ve been on big island. Will come back for future!

The food was excellent! We had the vegetarian Mapo Tofu Ramen and the Kotori Ramen (chicken). We went for dinner, and there was only one girl handling both taking orders and serving all the tables. She was very friendly, super efficient, and managed everything so well. Great service and an overall wonderful experience! Highly recommend this place.

While the sun blazed and hunger called in Kona, Ikkyu Ramen saved the day! With a vast menu, affordable prices, good condiments and generous portions, we opted for a spicy seafood ramen bowl and a fish katsu curry and they hit like water in the desert! Amazing taste, rich in flavour, a delight for the tongue. Really nice staff to boot! Worth a try if you're peckish!

Tons of great options. We had the Chicken Katsu Tantan Ramen and the Kimchee Ramen (spicy!) the pork was excellent and the chicken katsu was crunchy (but needed a little seasoning) Portions are big! Also had the Spam Katsu! It actually would've been better just seared rather than breaded Super fast service Clean and quaint decor
