Oceanfront Flavors Under the Kona Sun

Positioned right where the Pacific meets the shoreline in Kailua-Kona, Honu's on the Beach offers an open-air dining experience defined by the steady rhythm of crashing surf. The interior is refreshingly unpretentious, prioritizing the view over formality; you’ll find yourself listening to the saltwater spray while deciding between the Kona coffee-rubbed specialties and the fresh daily catch.

A Taste of Island Heritage

The kitchen leans into local Hawaiian ingredients, making it a reliable spot for visitors looking to ground their culinary experience in the Big Island’s terroir. Signature items often highlight the bounty of local fisherman, served with sides that emphasize tropical produce. The atmosphere shifts beautifully as the sky transitions from bright daylight to the dramatic violet hues of a Kona sunset, making it a prime location for those seeking a casual but scenic dinner.

Practical Island Tips

Because the restaurant is part of a larger resort complex along the coastline, the space can get quite busy during prime sunset hours. While the seating is expansive and airy, the proximity to the water means it can get breezy—bring a light layer even on warm evenings. The parking can be a bit of a maze given the hotel traffic, so arriving a few minutes early to secure a spot is a smart move if you want to avoid circling the lot. Whether you are coming off a day of snorkeling or looking for a relaxed evening meal with a cold drink, the environment is designed for those who prefer their dining with a side of salty ocean breeze.

We got there a little after 9am.The food was not very good, buffet was pretty limited for the price. Hash browns were hard, salad had very limited toppings, omelets were decent. Just kinda the basic food. Never got a refill on my sprite. We paid a little over $73.00 for my husband and I. When we checked out we were asked how it was I politely said not very good and we were told "sorry you had a shitty experience".

We had a reservation party of 27, To celebrate my sons Graduation. Host and floor manager was very friendly and welcomed us at the front desk. They had our table set up next to the live music, Which was awesome because the musician was jammin out great music. As we sat our server, Robert greeted us with water and introduced himself. We appreciate his help with the table arrangements ( As we needed to add 2 more people on to our party at the last minute), He also kept our water filled, and bussed our plates off repeatedly while taking care of other tables. The Buffet was also great, not overcrowded and had many great selections. We would definitely be back for another Prime rib & seafood buffet night. Much Mahaloz to Robert and to the rest of the staff that worked tonight.

Should’ve read the reviews more in depth. The prime rib and seafood buffet is pretty weak. There was no Caesar salad station or bread bowls which we were excited about and both were advertised on the buffet menu on their website. It does say on that menu that items are subject to change without notice, but a Caesar salad seems pretty standard. Drinks aren’t included, only tea and coffee, but no soda. Extremely overpriced for what it was and the atmosphere isn’t very welcoming. Our server was very nice, but the hostess barely said a word to us when she sat us. We love buffets lol and have been too many, and this was by far the most underwhelming and most overpriced. Save yourself the expense and get two or three dinners out somewhere else.

Please note that I score with price and genre in mind. This was a nice big buffet with prime rib, snow crab legs, salad, pasta bar, dessert table and sundae bar. $75pp The view and live music were nice. Aloha vibe for sure. Food was buffet food, but fresh and wholesome. 5:30pm arrival was perfect as the tennis crowd showed up at 6 and families at 6:30pm. Refilling the crab and prime rib was constant. Sashimi, white rice, chicken or fish teriyaki rounded out the offerings. Service was attentive. Although it’s implied for you to save your tableware, extra utensils and chopsticks are cheerfully supplied.

Superb food, great service. Good prices for the Island, view of the beach from your table. Connected to the hotel Marriott courtyard. We were there a few times during our stay and each time was really a pleasure. Handicapped accessible.

Parking is easy, and they validate for three hours. However, I don’t recommend the Sunday buffet. Some items are missing or no longer available, but they’re still on the menu. The food was below average, and I had the worst coffee I’ve had in the islands.

Not cheap, but then your in Kona, staying at the Marriott lol 😂 I enjoyed the food tremendously, the dinning experience and service interactions were genuine and fun 👍🏼

Only open for Friday dinner seafood & prime rib buffets now - reservation only. Food was good quality but not much variety. There was no fruit available, for example. If you love crab legs and prime rib and can eat a lot of those two things, it’s worth it. Otherwise, eh. -1 star for lack of variety for the $75 per person. Waitstaff was lovely, quick, and personable, and deserve all the praise. Live music was good. Views were amazing. -1 star for the manager who seemed to have it in for my boyfriend and me. Despite having helped us book our reservation earlier in the day, after we were seated by the host, she sent someone over to our table to confirm our last name and ask if we made reservations ?? Then didn’t make eye contact at all the entire evening but graciously tended to the other (older & nicely dressed) guests. Tip: When they say casual dress code on the website, they don’t mean it, especially if you’re under 40, or you will be judged.

We had the seafood buffet which was fabulous. There was an entire room of appetizers including clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, salads, raw fish specialties and crab legs. Everything we tried was excellent especially the crab legs. The main course offerings were prime rib, tempura shrimp and zucchini, and a pasta station where you choose your own ingredients and they cook them for you adding either Alfredo or marinara sauce at the end. All of the entrées were delicious. Yes we tried them all! Service was also excellent. Although this was a buffet all selections were plated by the staff who were numerous so that there was no waiting in line. Afterwards there was a dessert bar also excellent. And live music too.
