Island Flavors in the Heart of Kona

Finding a genuine plate lunch in Kailua-Kona doesn't require a white-tablecloth reservation. At Hawaiian BBQ Deli, the focus remains strictly on the staples that define local Hawaii comfort food. You are greeted immediately by the scent of charbroiled proteins and the sound of sizzling grills coming from an open kitchen layout that prioritizes speed and substance over frills.

The Signature Plate Experience

The menu leans heavily into the traditions of the mixed plate. You will find generous scoops of macaroni salad paired with double-scoop rice accompanying their signature Kalua pork or crispy katsu chicken. The portions are substantial enough to sustain a full day of snorkeling or hiking along the rugged Big Island coastline. It is the type of spot where the styrofoam container is standard, reflecting a no-nonsense approach to dining that locals appreciate.

What to Expect

Situated conveniently for those exploring the main thoroughfares of Kailua-Kona, this deli functions as a perfect pit stop. While the interior is utilitarian and keeps the focus entirely on the kitchen, the high volume of foot traffic indicates exactly why people stop here: consistent, savory, and affordable fuel. Be aware that during the mid-day lunch rush, the small parking area can become quite competitive, so consider arriving slightly before or after the standard noon surge. Whether you are craving a heavy serving of BBQ beef or just need a reliable meal that hits the spot without pretense, this deli delivers the authentic flavor profile of the islands in a quick-service format.

Secretive customer service person who took our order, then ordered chicken and broccoli and chicken is trash. Rice /veggies and sauce the only thing worth eating

Think of a more local L&L’s, similar plates, less pricey, very filling, and more options! We ordered a teriyaki chicken plate for our two kids and split a seafood combo for dinner and we still had leftovers. Great portions, value, and open later than most places. Definitely recommend!

The ingredients are fresh, the prices are reasonable, and they are stir-fried and fried on the spot. Highly recommended!!!

Unfortunately this happened today! Almost done eating my hamburger steak meal. While chewing on my macaroni salad, I felt something odd. Pulled it out of my mouth, IT WAS A USED BAND AID!! DISGUSTING 🤢 Got a full refund but doesn’t do justice. Stay away! TRUE STORY!

This place gives such generous portions and the food is so good! We were desperate for food and we just happen to find this place open an hour before they closed and got food quick and it was piping hot! We got an order of chicken Katsu and the Mixed BBQ plate (chicken and beef) and it was amazing! Hole in the wall, not fancy decore which is my usual indicator of delicious and it was! Highly recommend!

We enjoyed our food. I’ll be back for more salt n pepper tofu for sure. I’m not a huge fan of mac salad but it wasn’t bad.

This place is the best bang for your bucks! The price varies around $15 to $20 per person and you will leave the place FULL & satisfied. My husband got $14.99 Crispy Chicken on Soft Noodles (instead of Crispy Noodle) and that was the best decision I would recommend. The noodles were stir-fried with mixed vegetables (broccoli, carrots, squash, napa cabbage) -- which balanced out the meal so well. I got $17.99 New York Steak with Garlic Shrimps. The steak was cut into bite-sized pieces, which I really appreciated but it was very overcooked and lacked of flavors. The garlic shrimps on the other hand was very flavorful. The dish also came with some macaroni and fresh chopped cabbages, which was a bit bland to me but it was still alright and good for the value. I would try another dish next time though for a better flavoring. The cashier lady who also took our order was super nice and welcoming. The place could sit about 7-8 small parties and great for a casual/quick meal.

So, out taking care of some errands and get a little hungry. I stop here and I'm glad I did. A huge selection of choices. Not very busy but it needs to be. The food here is delicious. I ordered the dumplings to start and got the Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce. Dumplings are very nice sized. Cooked just right. Now that shrimp and black bean sauce.....hit it out the park!! I mean it was really tasty. Service was good. She is very nice and the chefs did a great job. Highly suggest you come here . It's all cooked fresh so there is a little wait for you food. Well worth it
