Gypsea Gelato (75-5813 Alii Dr)
About
A Tropical Chill on the Kona Coast
Walking along Alii Drive, the sea breeze carries the distinct, sweet scent of waffle cones toasted to a crisp. Gypsea Gelato has carved out a niche as the go-to destination for those looking to escape the midday heat of Kailua-Kona with a scoop of something truly local. Unlike standard ice cream shops that rely on mass-produced bases, this spot emphasizes a small-batch approach that leans heavily into the abundance of the Big Island.
Savoring the Big Island Harvest
The rotating flavor menu is a masterclass in regional sourcing. You might find yourself debating between the rich, earthy tones of locally grown Kona coffee or the bright, tangy punch of Puna lilikoi. The texture is consistently silky, a direct result of their commitment to traditional Italian preparation methods adapted for island life. The Lilikoi Cheesecake and Macadamia Nut varieties are perennial favorites, often serving as the perfect cool-down after a long morning of snorkeling or exploring the shoreline.
The Kona Vibe
The atmosphere is refreshingly casual, matching the laid-back rhythm of the coast. You will often see patrons hovering near the service counter, deciding which exotic fruit combination to try next. Expect a lively energy during the golden hour as the sun dips toward the horizon. Be mindful that seating is limited and communal; it is the type of place where you lean against the railing to watch the surf while your gelato begins to melt just a little faster than you can eat it. It is an essential stop for anyone wandering through the heart of the village, offering a brief, frozen reprieve that feels quintessentially Hawaiian.

I love Gypsea Gelato! Locally sourced ingredients and really tasty dairy-free options as well. Get coffee and really great bakery goods too all made in house. Yum! I love in Washington State and my daughter, hubby, and grandkids live south of Captain Cook. I buy gift certificates for all birthdays and Valentine's Day.

It was absolutely delicious! The prices had gone up a little, though. I went around 2:30 PM, and the selection was a bit limited.

Obsessed with this gelato! So many incredible island inspired flavors. Best toasted coconut gelato I’ve ever had. No wonder they have been voted best choice for so many years. Must have!

Aloha from @discoverthebigisland If you’re in Kona and craving something sweet, Gypsy Gelato is an absolute must-stop. 🍦 From the moment you walk up, the vibe is bright, fun, and welcoming—very “island meets artisan dessert.” The gelato is locally made, and you can truly taste the difference. Every flavor is rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. What really stood out to me was the quality and creativity of the flavors. Whether you go classic or try something more unique, everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully made. The texture is incredibly smooth—exactly what you want from authentic gelato. The staff is friendly and happy to let you sample (which makes choosing even harder… in the best way 😄). It feels like one of those spots you’ll keep coming back to, whether you live here or are just visiting. ✨ if you are struggling with picking flavors, Don’t overthink it and get at least two scoops. You’ll thank yourself later. This place is a kona gem!

There was a long line when we got here after dinner. This is a gelato store I would recommend as they have many unique flavors that I haven’t had elsewhere. Once such flavor is the Thai flavor of “Tom Kha”. We did a taste test and it had flavors of turmeric, coconut, and lemongrass. But it wasn’t something i prefer in gelato. We end up sharing lilikoi, toasted coconut haystack and Mauka trail (coffee, chocolate, and macadamia nuts). It was delicious!!!! There are 2 benches to sit right outside the store.

Very disappointing experience. The gelato was basically tasteless and not fresh at all. On top of that, the service was terrible. The staff seemed annoyed just for asking to sample flavors, which is supposed to be normal at a gelato shop. Definitely not coming back.

So many flavours I was confused. They allowed.me to have a few taste which helped me select from the unknown. I had the Tom Kha Gelato. It was amazing. The Kona coffee is great too

This is the best spot in Kona for Real Gelato! The location is great, tucked just off the main road in a charming little shopping square (Coconut Grove). It seems very busy in the evening, but it’s worth the wait. A huge plus is that you can pick 2 flavors even in the mini cups or cones. They have benches outside to sit down and enjoy your treat. 5 stars for the quality and the atmosphere!

We were told we could not miss this gelato experience and boy were our hosts correct! Every bite was creamy and delicious. They even have premade pints. You can purchase to take home. The non-dairy options were perfection. 10 out of 10. Recommend. Definitely stop by this yummy place.
