A Slice of Mexico in Kona

Stepping into El Maguey off the bustling main strip of Kailua-Kona feels like stumbling into a neighborhood haunt where the scent of sizzling fajitas and toasted corn tortillas greets you before you even reach your table. The room hums with the chatter of locals and travelers alike, creating an unpretentious, high-energy environment that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

What to Expect on Your Plate

The kitchen leans into traditional preparations, focusing on hearty portions that satisfy after a long day of snorkeling or driving along the Kona Coast. The signature molcajete is a standout, arriving in a heavy, searing-hot stone bowl bubbling with meats, cheese, and a punchy salsa that packs a legitimate kick. If you prefer something handheld, their street-style tacos are reliable, featuring house-made salsas that balance heat with fresh acidity. Don't be surprised if the server suggests the house margarita—it is crafted with a heavy hand, perfect for sipping while you listen to the rhythmic clatter of the kitchen.

The Kona Experience

While the decor keeps things simple, the spirit of the place is pure island-style hospitality. It is a straightforward spot for those who want a filling meal without the fuss of white tablecloths. A minor heads-up for those driving: parking in this pocket of Kailua-Kona can get tight during the peak sunset rush, so giving yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot is a smart move. Whether you are looking for a quick lunch of chips and guacamole or a boisterous dinner with friends, this is where you go when you want consistent Mexican flavors that hit the spot every time.

Not sure what this was but the only authentic Mexican part of it was the music. The carne asada should be renamed to sliced over saturated beef. Chips and salsa were good chips with a bowl of hot sauce. Don’t waste a meal in Kona getting this if you’re on vacation.

I have had several great meals here. Best time to arrive: 5 minutes after they open, because it gets BUSY with called-in takeout orders & people arriving for sit-down meals at their 10 four-person tables.

Mexican cuisine in any form is my favorite, but this place? The best food, the best service, and the best place for good vibes and a family feeling. If I could eat anywhere it’d be here. Always fresh, always CORRECT, and always always good.

Not your average run of the mill quick order restaurant. Everything was extremely fresh and made to order hense while it may take a little longer it’s well worth it! The staff was friendly, curious and knowledgeable on their menu. It was my first time but it for sure will not be my last… left with enough food for 2 more meals! I ordered the beef chimichangas combo plate it was delicious! Highly recommend checking this place out! I’m not a huge fan of guacamole but theirs was so good I kept eating it!!!

It's a mixed experience for sure. The standard chips and salsa were a solid disappointment. The salsa had absolutely not body consisting of what could best be described at chili pepper water and Chipotle with a generous portion of stale chips. The taco was generous and fresh. I chose the carne asada for protein.

Authentic Mexican food is hard to come by on the Big Island. This place has a hole-in-the-wall vibe and not hotel resort fancy, but the food is amazing and speaks for itself. We ordered the nachos, quesadillas and soft tacos and cleaned our plates. Ask for the horchata too if you want a refreshing drink!
