Don's Chinese Kitchen
About
A Local Secret in the Heart of Kona
Tucked away for those who know where to look in Kailua-Kona, Don's Chinese Kitchen offers a no-frills, authentic dining experience that cuts through the tourist-heavy scene of the Big Island. This is the type of spot where the focus remains entirely on the wok rather than the decor. Expect an unpretentious environment where the sound of sizzling oil and the sharp clatter of metal spatulas against seasoned pans set the rhythmic tempo of your meal.
Wok-Fired Classics
The menu leans into time-tested Cantonese staples. Regulars frequently gravitate toward the char siu and the generous portions of fried rice, which carry that distinct, smoky 'wok hei' flavor profile often missing from larger, modernized chains. The menu is expansive, making it an ideal choice for groups who want to share a variety of plates, from savory beef broccoli to crispy appetizers that arrive piping hot at your table.
What to Know Before You Go
The space is functional and efficient. You might find the seating capacity to be cozy during the evening rush, and like many gems in this part of Kailua-Kona, parking requires a bit of patience during peak hours. It is the perfect stop for locals or travelers looking for a hearty, reliable lunch or a quick, satisfying dinner after a long day at the beach. If you are craving comfort food that hits the mark without pretense, this kitchen provides a genuine taste of local Chinese-Hawaiian fusion culture.

Food is good, but service is bad. Lady with glasses helping in the front is very rude and will rush you to order fast.

Found a long clear piece of plastic in my noodles and the pork dumpling were undercooked. Read the reviews before you eat at a restaurant. I will not be eating here again.

This place is changed ownership and the new owners spoiled its reputation and now is a horrible place to eat.

I ordered the wor wonton min and it was loaded with veggies and won tons- no complaints! I also got a 2 choice plate with roast pork and beef broccoli and the rice noodle- could’ve had more beef broccoli on the plate but there was generous amounts of roast pork and noodles. Both ladies working behind the counter were patient, kind and courteous.

We love the food court but Don's has been pretty awful lately. Forgetting food orders, chicken tastes like rubber, noodles and rice are super dry. We won't be coming back anymore. The tables were all ditty today also.

Solid food, decent prices, good service. If you're looking for a faster option in Waimea order from the buffet menu here. Food off the buffet takes a little longer but it's also fresher. Hours are long which is a bonus too.
