A Slice of Coastal Tradition

Steps away from the crashing surf of the Big Island, Da Poke Shack serves as the gold standard for fresh, no-nonsense poke in Kailua-Kona. This isn't a place for white tablecloths or lengthy cocktail menus; it is a counter-service spot that prioritizes the ocean-to-plate journey. You will likely smell the sharp, salty scent of the Pacific as you walk through the door, mingled with the distinct aroma of sesame oil and spicy chili pepper.

The Daily Catch

The menu changes based on what the local fishing boats bring in each morning. Their signature Spicy Ahi and the traditional Hawaiian-style poke—marinated with kukui nut and ogo seaweed—are legendary among locals. Each portion is served in a humble container, often weighed by the pound, which makes it perfect for a beachside picnic or a quick lunch after a morning in the water.

What to Expect

The space is intentionally small and can get quite busy during the lunch rush, so be prepared for a bit of a line that often snakes out onto the sidewalk. It is a casual, high-energy environment where the focus is entirely on the quality of the raw, sashimi-grade fish. Seating is extremely limited, so most diners treat this as a grab-and-go destination. If you are looking for the most authentic taste of Hawaii, this is the destination. Don't be surprised if the shelves are bare by late afternoon; they sell out fast, which is the ultimate sign of their commitment to freshness.

4 choice poke and two choice seafood salad and lomi salmon: $50.00 x2 The portions of the choices don't justify the price. Even when you put the lomi salmon in with the poke and the juice goes everywhere on the bottom. The tourist don't know but I do. Maybe a small container so the poke no get runny. The tourist couple in front of me seen the price and walked out. Only my son and I were the only locals in line. The rest were all tourist which makes me think this is just another tourist trap. I've been to the other shop in Captain Cooke and for me the poke was way better back then. There's a sign on the door trying to justify the price because COVID and the storm. Sorry but COVID is over and the storm is pau. All these prices now days are stuck in COVID days. I don't think I'll be back or recommend anyone here.

This is an absolute must-visit spot for anyone craving authentic, fresh poke. The quality of the fish is outstanding, and it's clear that they prioritize sourcing the best ingredients possible. The casual, beachside vibe makes it the perfect place to grab a healthy, delicious meal after a day in the sun, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit to try more of their unique flavor combinations.

Da Poke Shack is just that, a small shack selling delicious poke. There was a line outside the door when we arrived, but it moved quickly. I had read reviews online and had wanted to eat here before arriving to Big Island, but once locals started recommending Da Poke Shack, I knew we needed to go. The poke was extremely fresh and flavorful. There are quite a few options for the top shelf (you pick one) and then multiple options for poke (you pick two). I chose the seaweed salad, which was great. My husband chose the kimchi mussels, also delicious. The rice was insane. Perfectly cooked sticky rice. And the poke was so flavorful and fresh it practically melted in your mouth. Eating at Da Poke Shack you know you’re eating a fresh, healthy meal that won’t weigh you down for the rest of the day. There are a few picnic style tables out front you can eat at, there is no seating inside.

Great food. Meticulously cut poke. Almost every piece is a perfect cube. I watched the guy cutting the tuna up by hand from a huge slab. The downside is the Kona prices. Twice the price and smaller size than the out of the way places. I took it to go and ate at a park just south.

Best poke we tasted in Kona! The fish quality and seasoning flavors were amazing. The quality of side dishes were also impressive.
