Island Spirits in the Heart of Kailua-Kona

Stepping into Cheeky Tiki, you are immediately greeted by the humid, salt-kissed air of the Big Island mingling with the scent of muddled lime and toasted coconut. This open-air escape captures the quintessential spirit of Kailua-Kona, offering a space that feels less like a traditional bar and more like a backyard gathering hosted by a friend with an expert-level rum collection.

Crafting the Kona Pour

The menu leans heavily into classic Polynesian mixology with a local twist. You won't find sugary, pre-mixed concoctions here; instead, the bartenders focus on fresh juices and house-made syrups. Their signature Mai Tai is a study in balance—nutty orgeat against the sharp bite of dark, aged rum—served in heavy glassware that beads with condensation within seconds of hitting the table.

The Lay of the Land

The aesthetic is low-key, avoiding the polished sheen of resort bars in favor of weathered wood and vintage surf ephemera. It is the perfect spot for those who have spent their day snorkeling at Kahalu’u and want to shed their sandy gear for a cold drink as the sun drops behind the Pacific horizon. Just a heads-up: the space is intimate and the acoustics can climb when the evening crowd settles in, so it’s better suited for lively chatter than hushed business meetings.

While the footprint is compact, the energy is expansive. Whether you are claiming a stool at the bar to watch the rhythm of the drink-making process or finding a small table to share a plate of pupus, the experience remains distinctly grounded in the easy-going lifestyle that defines the west coast of Hawaii.

I was impressed with both the quality of food and service. My girlfriend mentioned that she had a shellfish allergy and ordered the chips and smoked Aji dip and the waitress immediately let her know that the chips are cooked in the same oil as shellfish and she should probably avoid those. She offered to toast some French bread instead which proved even more delightful than the chips. I got the fish tacos and a piña colada and they were both exceptional. My girlfriend got the tuna melt and said it was "to die for". The views of the bay and Hawaii vibe made it a great Hawaii experience.

Really ! Enjoyed my meal. I had miso chicken - basically perfect. Husband had guava BBQ pulled pork. He also liked it. I can't wait to come back with my gal pals for drinks and dinner. Sweet view!

We are so happy we chose this place. The service was incredible. The view was spectacular and The food was amazing. We ordered the beer battered fish and chips and the Cuban. Both were outstanding!!! I am a big fan of a Cuban sandwich and this was the best one I have had. The fish and chips were delicious and the caper starter sauce was so different but so good. And the fries - on point!! I wish I qould have taken pictures but we dug right in because the food looked so incredible - only got pics of the view.

Fish and chips comes with three small pieces of fish for nearly $30. The overpriced salad comes without several ingredients listed in the description on the menu. One waitress for the entire upstairs so service was a bit slow. She was very nice though. I personally didn’t feel like our food was worth the $150 bill

We rolled through on three different visits while we were in Kona, and Melissa was our server every single time. She’s amazing—friendly, on top of it, and totally keeps the vibe fun. She nailed the recommendations and timing, making us feel like relaxed locals even though we were tourists. Food and drinks were consistently killer. The sashimi (Ono I believe ) was my absolute favorite on the menu. I didn’t hit a single dish I wouldn’t order again; everything tasted great. The Zombie was my husband’s obsession—I personally loved the Missionaries Downfall; bright, balanced, and super refreshing. The tiki mug scene is legit. They’ve got a huge selection you can buy, which is a totally fun and a collectible touch. Views and vibe hit different. The upper deck is gorgeous, especially during a rainstorm over the ocean—really magical. The energy is lively, perfect for a fun night out with your partner, friends or family. If you’re in Kona and want solid food, amazing drinks, and service that makes you feel welcome from the first hello, Cheeky Tiki is a no-brainer. We’re already planning our next trip back!

We visited this place during our 3 day trip of Big Island 28th Mar- amazing visit during lunch hour. I would give 5 stars for this visit. The ambience is really nice and the decor is well set with beautiful ocean views. The food and service both were top notch. Their mango and guava virgin pina coladas were amazing. Our favourite was Huli Huli Tofu Bites, empanadas, mac nut shrimp and duo bao shrimps. 30th Mar- we again visited them in the afternoon based on our experience from the first visit. This visit completely changed our experience and opinion. We ordered almost the same food except for 1-2 dishes which they were out of and had to order something else instead. Our server was super monotonous while taking order no smiles no greetings. We waited almost 50 mins for our food. The drinks came quick but tasted completely different- full of sugar with no flavour. They were out of veg empanadas so my vegetarian friend ordered tofu bao buns which was simply a piece of tofu with no sauce or condiments with few pieces of avocado and jalapenos similarly with spicy chicken hawaiian baos...there was nooo spice just pieces of boil chicken. While we were eating and waiting for 1 dish to still come our server asked us if we already want to pay the bill. At this point the behaviour of the manager and the team was just outright cold. During our first visit the manager wasn't present I believe this place functions well without him.

Perfect if you’re looking for vibes! Incredible view, wonderful tiki drinks, tiki mugs you’ll want tot ale home, great Hawaiian pub food, and a cute manager! The Mai tai was 10/10 and we will be back for more. The painkiller was also perfect. We went for lunch and we were sad we didn’t just go for drinks because the lounge sitting was too good! Will be back!
