Big Island Grill
About
Local Flavors at the Heart of Kailua-Kona
If you are wandering through the breezy streets of Kailua-Kona looking for a plate that mirrors the island's true character, Big Island Grill is your destination. This isn't a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a bustling, no-frills institution where the scent of savory gravy and grilled meats hits you the moment you step through the door.
The Home of the Iconic Plate Lunch
The menu is a deep dive into Hawaii’s plantation-era food culture. You’ll find the classics executed with a heavy hand and a generous spirit. The mochiko chicken is a standout, featuring a crisp, slightly sweet batter that keeps the meat inside succulent. Pair that with their famous loco moco—a towering assembly of house-made hamburger patties, eggs cooked to your preference, and a mountain of rice drenched in a rich, dark brown gravy that leans on the savory side.
What to Expect on a Visit
Expect a lively, sometimes chaotic energy during the lunch rush. It is a favorite among local workers and visitors who prefer an unvarnished experience over tourist-trap dining. The tables are packed close together, so be prepared to hear snippets of local conversation and the occasional clatter of takeout boxes being filled at top speed. Parking can get a little tight in the immediate lot, but the efficiency of the kitchen staff ensures the turnover is brisk. It is the perfect spot for those who value portion size and authentic, salt-of-the-earth seasoning above all else.

Ok, this is gonna take my best descriptors so here goes. I seriously jones for the macadamia pancakes here , and they never disappoint. So I ate yet another plate of them, crispy bacon and some easy-over eggs. Coffee is the only place I take it black, so dang good

I heard positive things about this restaurant a while ago and finally got the chance to go! I ordered the B.I.G. Fish Salad (broiled fresh fish, romaine, purple sweet potatoes, creamy sesame dressing, etc.) and B.I.G. Ice Cream Pie (coconut haupia ice cream, graham cracker crust, chocolate sauce, diced macnuts, whipped cream). The ice cream pie might have been the single best dessert item I've ever had.

We stopped here for our last meal on this trip to Hawaii. It was decently busy and had some age on the decor and inside. The staff were friendly and you never had to wait long for anything. The menu was well stocked with different foods and averaged priced for the island. The staff was always moving and grooving to make sure the visit was a good one. The super loco moco was awesome and way better than the first one I tried at another restaurant. The waffles were happily consumed by my wife and kiddo who both reported that they were happy with their selection.
