Barefoot Luxury at the Water's Edge

Perched right where the black lava rock meets the Pacific in Kailua-Kona, Beach Tree Restaurant & Bar offers a dining experience defined by the constant, rhythmic lull of the surf. The space eschews formal walls, opting for an open-air pavilion design that blurs the line between the lush Four Seasons Hualalai grounds and the endless blue horizon. As the sun dips below the ocean, the ambient lighting turns amber, perfectly mirroring the sky.

Mediterranean Flair, Island Ingredients

Chef Thomas Bellec’s kitchen masters the intersection of coastal Italian technique and Big Island bounty. The menu leans heavily into wood-fired pizzas and fresh, line-caught seafood. The signature Beach Tree pizza, topped with locally sourced goat cheese and fresh basil, offers a crisp, smoky profile from the blistering heat of the stone oven. Be sure to sample the catch of the day, often prepared with a delicate citrus butter that highlights the quality of the regional waters.

A Local Note

While the setting is undeniably world-class, keep in mind that the sand-covered floors mean you can easily leave your dress shoes in the hotel room. It is a place that celebrates the salt air and the cooling trade winds, though those same winds can occasionally make napkin management a small challenge during peak evening gusts. The atmosphere remains casual yet elevated, making it a go-to for those who want to sip a craft cocktail with their toes actually touching the sand.

The Kona Evening Ritual

This is not a spot for a quick bite; it is a venue built for lingering. Between the sound of the ukulele drifting from the bar area and the smell of kiawe wood smoke curling from the kitchen, the space captures the quintessential spirit of a Big Island sunset. Arrive early to snag a table near the water line, as the best seats in this coastal sanctuary fill up well before the first star appears.

Beach Tree at Four Seasons Hualālai is one of those places where the setting almost steals the show—and honestly, it kind of does (in the best way). The restaurant sits right on the beach with completely unobstructed ocean views, and if you time it around sunset, it’s absolutely stunning. Live Hawaiian music in the background adds to the atmosphere without being overpowering. It’s relaxed luxury. The food is very good, though not quite at the level of the setting. The menu leans Italian/Californian with fresh local ingredients. The seafood is excellent and the pastas are solid, but this isn’t a “culinary destination” spot—it’s more about consistently high-quality, well-executed dishes rather than anything groundbreaking. Service is exactly what you’d expect from a Four Seasons: warm, attentive, and polished without being intrusive. Prices are definitely on the higher side, but you’re paying for the full experience—the location, the ambiance, and the overall vibe. Best tip: book a table about 30–45 minutes before sunset and request oceanfront seating if possible. Overall, Beach Tree delivers a near-perfect Hawaii evening. Come for the food, the view and atmosphere, and you’ll leave happy.

Our top experience in Kona on this trip. This restaurant is located in an amazing setting for sunset and evenings and the service and food is impeccable. The main reason for our visit was the vegan menu and options and the food did not disappoint. Everything seemed made from fresh ingredients and entirely in house. Even the timing of how the plates came out seemed entirely planned out. The coconut sorbet was to die for. Hokulani was our server and her service was the best we’ve had, maybe ever. It was impressive how she seemed to remember every part of the menu in detail and also the wine menu with knowing the cities of origin from the top of her head! There was a fire dancer, live music, and hula dancer during the evening around sunset hour. All authentic feel too. None of the cheesy stuff… Really hope to be back again one day. Going to dinner here isn’t just a meal, it’s an entire experience.

We have enjoyed lunch here multiple times with our real estate colleagues, and we always come away thinking, "Why don't we eat here more often?" It's close to Kailua-Kona, prices are reasonable, and the ambience is amazing! All of the food that we've tried has been amazing, and my wife LOVES the non-alcoholic coconut lemonade. (I think it's a non-menu item, so you have to ask for it by name!) We will definitely enjoy Beach Tree more in 2026.

Great place to visit for a date night in big island. Very high quality Italian dishes here. We ordered Arancini and Polpette as appetizer, and they were both very straightforward and traditional recipe but cooked to perfection. I appreciated this very traditional Italian dish with no unnecessary additional flavors added to it (sometimes, it is just SO HARD to find a restaurant that cooks basic dish RIGHT!) but I can also see some people might appreciate a unique flavor with some chef’s touch in a five star hotel restaurant. My pasta, Lobster Agnolotti, was perfect, too. It also had some unique flavor, and you get almost half a lobster in this dish. I definitely felt that it was worth the price I paid for. The other pasta dish that my husband ordered was pretty good. Overall, great experience with good service and amazing beachfront view. I would come back here again.
