Island-Style Mornings in the Heart of Kailua-Kona

When you pull up to 808 Grindz Cafe, don't expect a polished, white-tablecloth affair. You are here for the local experience—the kind where the line sometimes snakes out the door and into the warm Kona air. It is a no-frills, high-energy spot that captures the essence of a traditional Hawaiian breakfast.

Signature Flavors of the Big Island

The kitchen specializes in what locals call "grindz," serving up massive portions that fuel you for a day of snorkeling or hiking. Their signature dish, the Loco Moco, is a masterclass in comfort: a thick, juicy beef patty served over a bed of white rice, smothered in rich, savory gravy and topped with eggs cooked precisely to your liking. If you prefer something sweeter, the macadamia nut pancakes are a local staple, arriving at your table fluffy, golden, and generous with the island’s most famous nut.

The Local Pulse

Stepping inside, the clatter of silverware and the hum of conversation create a lively, bustling atmosphere. It is the perfect place for families or travelers looking to break away from resort dining and eat like a Kona resident. Just be prepared for the tight floor plan; you might find yourself bumping elbows with a neighbor as you enjoy your coffee. It’s part of the charm. If you find the parking lot near the Hualalai Road corridor filling up fast, just exercise a little patience—it is well worth the wait for a plate of authentic island soul food that leaves you satisfied until dinner.

This is a hole in the wall eatery. The food was fantastic, everything is given to you in a togo container. The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired, I did not want to dine in. That being said, that is one of the best omelets I've had in a while! I got the vegetarian omelet with bacon. The pancakes are what you would expect, basic but good! The ham eggs Benedict was good. The English muffin was soft. The ube coconut pancakes were flavorful! Would order from here again, but I would not dine in.

Service was friendly, prompt, and professional. The food came out hot and had good flavor. I especially loved that it was served in a to-go box, super convenient. The only downside was that the plasticware made it a bit tough to cut the English muffin. Overall, a great little breakfast spot!!

Pretty solid breakfast food at a reasonable price. We ordered the Portuguese Moco which the sausage was good, but the hash was a little dry. The Da Bene Trio was pretty solid as well but the salmon and pork where also a little tough and dry. Overall, a decent spot with fast service, good menu options and decent food.

Super solid local spot. The food was exactly what you want simple, generous, and really well executed. The pancakes were fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness, and the butter + syrup combo hit perfectly. The grilled meat was juicy, well-seasoned, and had that nice char from the grill. Mac salad and rice were classic and balanced the plate well. Portions are big, so you definitely leave full. The vibe is chill, no fuss, and feels authentic not a tourist trap. Service was friendly and efficient. If you’re looking for good, affordable comfort food done right, this place delivers. Would definitely come back.

This was a fantastic find. This place is simple, but has a large menu. I was looking for some good pancakes eggs, etc and this spot had it all. Pancakes were fantastic. The people were nice and the food came very fast. If you want a good standard breakfast this is the place.

I am a huge breakfast connoisseur! So when I heard about this place in Hawaii, I had no choice but to visit! All I can say is that I was completely blown out of the water! I ordered the POG (passionfruit-orange-guava) as my beverage, and it was both soothing and thirst quenching! For my main course I ordered the macadamia nut pancakes , with a side of hash-browns, The hash-browns tasted like pure Southern comfort and reminded me of my Grandmother’s!!! Yum! The macadamia nut pancakes came with delicious hazelnut butter and syrup!!! The pancakes melted in my mouth, and the texture with the amazing macadamia nuts was pure bliss! I will be back to try more items! Amazing friendly service + a laid back ambiance while I dined in. Cheers!
