Honokaa Country Market
About
A Taste of Hamakua Tradition
Stepping into Honokaa Country Market feels like catching a glimpse of the town's agricultural soul. Located right along the main drag of Honokaa, this spot serves as a vital hub for residents and visitors trekking toward the Waipio Valley lookout. The air inside often carries the faint, sweet scent of local lilikoi and the earthy aroma of freshly gathered produce, grounding you immediately in the rhythm of the Big Island.
More Than Just a Quick Stop
While the footprint is modest, the shelves punch above their weight. This isn't your average convenience store; it’s a place where you can find honest, locally sourced ingredients that define the Hamakua Coast. Whether you are hunting for a quick snack to fuel a hike or looking for the specific artisanal goods that define the local pantry, the inventory here is curated with a keen eye for quality. It’s an ideal pitstop for those who prefer to support island-grown vendors rather than mass-market options.
The Local Pace
Expect a laid-back, unhurried energy that reflects the quiet charm of the north side of the island. It’s the kind of place where you might find yourself chatting with a neighbor while picking out seasonal fruits. Just a heads-up: parking along the street can get a bit competitive during the mid-day rush, so keep your eyes peeled for a spot as you navigate the historic storefronts. It’s the perfect, authentic way to experience Honokaa’s small-town hospitality before heading back out onto the winding coastal roads.

A small country store. We got a recommendation from the girl at the fruit stand. I was a little skeptical. It was very quiet when we walked in and they were out of a lot of items. But they were able to make each sandwhich we wanted. I got the BLT and it was amazing

I don’t often do reviews but I had the best BLT I’ve ever eaten here. Triple-decker and so juicy I could have used a bib. It seemed like there was a 1/4 lb of of bacon, and it was perfectly seasoned. The owner was engaging and pleasant. Sandwiches are made to order, so we were glad we were the only ones there

What delicious food! Hot snacks for breakfast. We had one of their little quiches - savory and scrumptious with done type of cheese and sausage. There is something for everyone here - food is staples, jellies, candy, souvenir tees, jewelry, stickers, etc. Super sociable counter person as well!

We got into town late from our travels and this was the last spot open at 6pm! Grabbed an AMAZING club turkey, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had oddly enough. There was a little wait time but just because of friendly conversation and that island time charm, the owner said we could each grab a free beverage because of it. The hospitality and local charm here makes it a must do on the agenda!! So thankful for their service and kindness to us. Store selection was phenomenal as well.

This is a fabulous little market, and the deli is even more fabulous! This is truly THE BEST BLT in the world!! Also, the Greek sandwich was packed full of flavor and tasted authentic. We were in Greece just a few weeks ago and it rivaled some of our favorites there. We highly recommend this as a lunch stop. Ashley (the owner) is so nice and helpful too!

You absolutely must stop at this market! The food is phenomenal and the family that runs it is so lovely. They offer a bunch of local products from produce, awesome looking cuts of grass fed meats, kombucha, beers and cocktail drinks from Hawaii, locally made soaps, and a nice selection of market items. The food counter serves soup and deli sandwiches that are seriously bomb! We tried the new Ham and Cheese which was literally the best ham I’ve ever had, not to mention the gooey cheddar, onion crisps and caramelized onions with the lilikoi BBQ being the perfect topping combination. The highlight for me was probably the homemade Poi bun that it came on, perfect texture with a slight sweetness. We also tried the plain Poi roll which I wish I had a dozen more of. They’re topped with sea salt and don’t even need butter they have such a good flavor. The service was top notch, friendly, local, and family run. The market vibe is fun, welcoming, and accommodating. I would go out of my way to drive back here to try some more of the food options. The sandwich portions are huge. It was jam packed with meat and flavor. Seriously do yourself a favor and do not pass this place up !
