A Taste of the Hamakua Coast

Perched along the historic Mamane Street, Harmoni Foods brings a grounded, straightforward approach to dining in the heart of Honokaa. This is the spot where local residents grab a quick, satisfying bite while navigating the steep slopes and charm of this former sugar plantation town. The air inside carries the faint, sweet scent of local produce, a nod to the agricultural roots that still define this part of the Big Island.

What to Expect on Your Plate

The menu focuses on simplicity and freshness, favoring ingredients sourced from nearby growers. You won't find pretension here; the kitchen excels at hearty portions that fuel locals and visitors alike. Whether you are grabbing a nutrient-dense bowl or a rotating daily special, the food reflects the laid-back rhythm of life in Honokaa. It is an ideal stop for those seeking a genuine, unpolished connection to the region's culinary landscape.

The Local Experience

The space is modest and utilitarian, designed for those who prioritize substance over flare. If you visit during the mid-day rush, be prepared to navigate the sidewalk bustle of Honokaa village. Parking can be a bit of a localized sport along the main thoroughfare, so keep an eye out for spots near the old theater or adjacent side streets. It is the kind of place where the staff likely knows your name if you visit more than once, offering a slice of authentic island community that feels increasingly rare. Perfect for a casual lunch after exploring the nearby Waipio Valley lookout or a winding drive along the coast.

Harmoni Foods is some of the best food you can eat on Hawaii Island, or anywhere. As someone from the Bay Area, CA, who's been exposed to some of the best food in the world, the quality of Susie's food, her dedication to supporting local farmers and bringing health and vibrance to community has made such a difference. I make it a point to go weekly. It's just SO good! Not to mention, Susie is incredible. It's a joy to go into her place, chat with her or the folks in line, and appreciate all the details in the space she created with her own two hands. She does everything! Construction, kimchi fermenting, sourcing organic ingredients from local farmers, cooking, front of house, cleaning... It's remarkable.

If you get one meal on big island, this is the place to go. Susie sources local, high quality ingredients and makes each dish to order. As someone who grew up around K-town in LA and has visited Korea a couple times, I can say it is as authentic of a Korean meal as one can get (plus, has with the Hawaiian influence that you crave). She offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options that don’t make you miss meat. If you eat meat, all the options are sublime. As someone who frequents Harmoni and has tried everything on the menu, you can’t go wrong anything. My favorite is the local beef bibimbap with an over-easy egg and black rice. To top it off, Susie is the best and has created a community space. Every visit feels like coming home - she has a loyal bunch who travel across island, far and wide to eat here. I wish Harmoni was open daily. And if I’m really wishing for something, I wish I could pack her ono food with me as a traveling PT!

We were so lucky to find this yummy, super-healthy food when we first moved here over three years ago! Back then, Chef Susie was a one-woman show in a charming, tiny bright red trailer. You can see the pics of her beautiful food in the reviews. Susie makes great efforts to get locally sourced veggies and meats and makes her own tasty kimchis. Since the red trailer days, she’s blossomed into a full kitchen (still one-woman show) with an indoor eating area that has a wonderful community vibe where you somehow end up talking story with interesting local residents and travelers from all over. It’s the only place in Honokaa where there’s a waiting line (that’s where the talking story comes in). Susie herself is personable, hilarious and really cares about food! I always get the bibimbap and love that I can get veg only with tofu when I want. We are regulars here and feel nurtured by this food every time! Thank you Susie!

Incredible food and delightfully friendly service at Harmoni foods. The owner is so nice and provided excellent recommendations for what ended up being a hearty lunch and dinner (sizeable portions as others have mentioned). Had the bibim with locally sourced beef and it was bomb, the kimchi grilled cheese also a hit. And the lemonade is every bit as good as the other reviews say, so fresh and perfectly balanced sweet and tart. This lady knows her food and you can taste it in every mouthful. Worth a detour if you're anywhere near Honokaa on Friday/Saturday

Susie is amazing! She crafted our food with care and it's the best meal I've had in months. I ordered Kimchee Grilled Cheese with pork. I wish I could give more stars 🩷🩷🩷

What a gem this place is! The owner is so kind and giving. She’s so passionate about her food and sharing with others. Eating the bibimbap is like receiving a hug. Everything is fresh and local. Don’t pass by, stop in for some good eats.

This is quite possibly one of my favorites on the entire island. Farm to table taste and feel. One bi bim bop is definitely enough for two or get two and have leftovers. This food is like Korean moms cooking. You'll feel right at home. The ginger/turmeric lemonade is perfect. The right amount of each ingredient for a healthy taste sensation. Lastly, the music is so chill. Take a bite and close your eyes while you sway to the beat and chew your delicious bi bim bop. The kids will love the Korean flair of the tacos and grilled cheese. They also have goat cheese that is melt in your mouth. Homemade gochuchong.

What a delicious vegan bowl! Great service, high quality ingredients, and such a heart healthy full meal. I loved the fat of avocado, bitter of the kimchi, the full but soft dark rice, such a perfect meal, thank you! As a vegan I was so grateful for my bowl and my non vegan friends loved their dish also! Simple menu, great ingredients and a beautiful place to eat, Chef and owner Suzie has it down!
