Hanzawas in Haiku
About
A Slice of Upcountry Maui History
Stepping into Hanzawas in Haiku feels like taking a deliberate step back into Maui’s plantation era. Located in the heart of Haiku town, this spot is far from the polished resort dining scenes found down by the coast. Instead, it serves as a functional relic where local workers and surfers grab a quick, hearty meal before heading back out to the North Shore breaks.
Plantation Roots and Local Flavors
The space is humble and unpretentious, defined by weathered wood and the lingering scent of seasoned grills. It serves as a community anchor for the Haiku area, known primarily for its classic plate lunches that hit the spot after a rainy afternoon on the road to Hana. Expect no frills here; it is an authentic grab-and-go experience where the focus remains squarely on generous portions of comfort food.
The Practicalities of Haiku Dining
The menu leans heavily into local favorites, featuring rotating daily specials that reflect the soul of Maui’s Upcountry food culture. While the parking lot can get a bit cramped when the lunch rush hits, the accessibility to the Hana Highway makes it a perfect pit stop for those traversing the island. Be prepared for a casual, fast-paced environment where the hum of local chatter provides the background noise. It is an ideal spot for those who prefer their meals without ceremony—just solid, reliable cooking that honors the island's working-class history.

Wow, a very neat, country store with a gas station that's like a small grocery full of unique to familiar brands. The girl at the register was also very friendly. I got a slice of banana bread and a tall Hawaiian bottled water for less than 6 bucks. Keep up the good service folks!

Quaint local general store that has just about anything you want including a deli and plate lunches. This shot is of the beautiful protea and tropical bouquets they sell right as you enter.

The deli in this store is amazing! All the lady's were super friendly. And it was hands down the best taco I have had. Ever. On and off the island! I would be here everyday if I could. The guides to our ziplining tour were talking about stopping for lunch. I was starving and inquired. They were all there when I walked in. For like $3.50 for a massive taco I see why. It was delicious!
