Fresh Flavors in the Heart of Pearl City
Stepping into Up Roll Cafe feels like stumbling upon a neighborhood secret. Located right in the bustling center of Pearl City, this spot cuts through the noise of the surrounding strip malls with a focused menu dedicated to high-quality sushi rolls and local Hawaiian-style comfort food. The air carries the sharp, clean scent of vinegared rice and fresh seaweed, a refreshing departure from the heavier fried options nearby.
The Sushi Experience
The kitchen prides itself on the 'Up Roll' signature selection, which leans heavily into creative flavor combinations. Unlike the sprawling, ornate rolls found at high-end resorts, the offerings here are built for speed and accessibility. The fish arrives with a firm texture and bright color, signaling consistent turnover. Don’t sleep on their specialty rolls; the balance of spicy mayo to fresh cucumber provides that signature crunch local diners crave.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
This is not a destination for a long, drawn-out white-tablecloth dinner. It is a functional, efficient hub perfect for a quick workday lunch or a grab-and-go meal before heading home. The seating area is compact and functional—you might find yourself bumping elbows with a neighbor during the lunch rush, but that intimacy adds to the casual, unpretentious charm. Whether you are a fan of traditional nigiri or prefer the indulgence of a tempura-fried roll, the kitchen maintains a strict standard of preparation. If you visit during peak hours, keep in mind that the parking lot gets notoriously tight, so patience is a virtue here. It is the kind of place that rewards the regular customer who values consistency over fanfare.

First time here and I really enjoyed the food. I chose the 2 Poké option: Fruikake Ahi and Yuzu Avacado Salmon. Paired deliciously with their Blue Hawaiian Lemonade. A hidden gem down the road from my house!

I am giving a 5star because their food is good. It’s a little expensive but the quality is better than most of the places in this food court.

Smallest poke bowl I've ever seen. Ahi didn't taste fresh, tastes like it was frozen, and then defrosted. They gave little rice and soaked it in sesame oil. I could barely even eat it.

They were temporarily closed, but now they’re back with new ownership and an exciting reopening! The menu is easier to navigate, with tons of new original drinks and even more yakiniku options. Definitely worth checking out for the fresh updates!

Pearl City Highland Market Up Roll Cafe'. Enjoyed a fresh made to order, healthy chicken salad. Choice of base, with rice, brown rice, quinoa or fresh greens. They also can do half- half of two bases. Generous layer of tender chicken, choice of tasty sauces, alfalfa spouts, corn, carrots, greens and crisp garlic crumble (appox. $9.50). All items are made to order, so ordering ahead should be considered, if time is a factor. Highland Market open daily 8am to 4:30pm.

$15+ for a sushi burrito. Honestly not worth it, the seaweed was wet so if you take the parchment off it'll literally fall apart. The ice tea with coconut was pretty good though.

I ordered a crab roll, was tasty. Wish there was more crunch. Next time I'll add some. Delicious and didn't feel like a glutton after.
