Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant (98-1226 Kaahumanu St)
About
A Pearl City Staple for Genuine Japanese Comfort
Walking into Gyotaku on Kaahumanu Street feels like stepping into a long-standing neighborhood tradition. This Pearl City fixture has built its reputation on the teishoku—the classic Japanese set meal—that defines home-style cooking. The air inside is consistently filled with the savory scent of miso soup and the faint, appetizing sizzle of tempura being prepared in the open kitchen.
The Art of the Teishoku
The menu remains deep and varied, staying true to traditional Japanese preparation methods. Regulars often gravitate toward the nabemono dishes or the fresh sashimi platters, which showcase the kitchen’s commitment to quality seafood. If you are indecisive, the combination sets offer a perfect cross-section of textures, balancing crisp fried items against delicate, simmered vegetables and pickles. The service is brisk and efficient, designed for families looking for a reliable dinner spot without the pretension of fine dining.
Local Nuances
While the dining room is spacious enough to accommodate large family gatherings, keep in mind that the parking lot during peak dinner hours can get quite snug. It is a minor hurdle for a meal that consistently delivers on comfort and flavor. Whether you are looking to enjoy a quiet lunch or a hearty evening feast, the atmosphere here is unpretentious, loud in a warm, communal way, and deeply ingrained in the local dining fabric of Central Oahu. It is the kind of place where the hot green tea is always being topped off before you even realize your cup is getting low.

Food never disappoints, one of our favorites for Japanese food. I just wish they would replace/update their old, saggy, dirty decor. Only the back section tables and chairs are updated. The main dining area is not.

Probably a good price for seniors and happy hour but wasn't our cup of tea. We got the Miso salmon as well as the chicken katsu curry and the salmon was overcooked. Waitress was nice but was really upset when we said we didn't want boxes for our food to go and felt pressured into taking it home. Probably won't come back the quality of the food for the price it was at wasn't worth it

The food is so amazing! I love the crispy chicken Katsu. It’s so juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside it absolutely melts in my mouth I could eat this all day! The service is incredible! Got seated down fast. Alan our server greeted us so nicely and gave our food out so quickly and gave us any other things we requested to our need so well. Thank you! The environment is so clean and relaxing to nicely dine in with family and friends. I highly recommend this place and I will always be happy to come back here again! 😊 Update: food is good as ever, but I see how amazing the staff is here. I see them working with 3 large parties and they work very hard to make sure everyone is enjoying a good time, serve with a smile and willing to make sure we have everything we need. I always appreciate them when I come!

Food was great . Our waitress so so awesome. She was so helpful and always smiling. We celebrated my son's birthday and even gave her a piece of cake. Great customer service for dinner service.

Service is VERY SLOW 🐌 I ordered 3 combo bento for $40 something expecting it to have a good portion and taste but it was the complete opposite. For a pricey bento the portion is so small and the tonkatso was so hard. The katso of my son was too brown and over fried, seems like the oil was used many times very unhealthy esp for kids, the fries was so oily as well. Their ice cream tasted old . The hostess is not so friendly , the server was nicer but the service is too slow ,it took more than an hour to take our order and deliver our food. The cleaning staff was hard working and nice as well. But this is definitely gonna be our 1st and last visit. I recommend looking for another place when visiting Hawaii.

There is really nothing special about the restaurant and the seating/tables. Thats until they bring out the food that looks like someone took pride in making it. The dishes were well presented and the staff was very friendly and polite. Everything was cooked perfectly and plated simple but elegant. Their desert menu was also simple but everything was well made and taste delicious. I can't wait to go back and try some other options.

My girlfriend and I came to Gyotaku on Christmas and it ended up being one of our favorite holiday meals. The Pele Lava Roll was 🔥 (great balance of flavor and heat), and the ribeye was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Staff was kind, quick, and made the whole experience feel easy even on a busy day. Cozy atmosphere, great food, and a perfect place to spend Christmas together.

Best Japanese food in Hawaii. A little pricey for the atmosphere. Not the best for a romantic date night unless you’re a foodie wanting good food because you miss Japan. The seats are a bit close together to where you can hear others conversations. They do run deals to make up for the price so try to catch happy hour or some of their other specials!

Visiting from Maui services here is outstanding. The 1st time came for dinner. Our 2nd time here, we decided to have lunch. Can't complain about the prices. They're reseonable. We had the Pokechos, Gyotaku Lunchbox, Teri Steak, and finished the meal with their Deluxe Green Tea shaveice topped with azuki beans and vanilla ice cream.

Very friendly staff. Food comes out relatively quick. Nice little quaint restaurant. Try for early dinner, because this place fills up fast.
