A Culinary Landmark in the Heart of Kauai

Set within the historic Kilohana Plantation in Lihue, The Plantation House by Gaylords offers an experience that feels like stepping back into Old Hawaii. The sprawling, open-air courtyard, surrounded by lush tropical gardens, provides a backdrop of elegance that is hard to replicate. You will hear the gentle rustle of palm leaves and perhaps the faint, distant clip-clop of the plantation railway tour passing nearby.

The Flavors of the Island

The menu focuses on farm-to-table excellence, utilizing ingredients grown right on the Kilohana estate. Whether you are ordering the fresh catch of the day or the signature slow-roasted prime rib, the preparation highlights local Hawaiian sourcing. The scent of hibiscus and plumeria often drifts into the dining room, blending with the rich aromas of a well-seared steak. The cocktails, particularly those featuring local tropical fruits, are crafted with a precision that keeps visitors coming back.

What to Expect

This is an ideal spot for those celebrating a milestone or anyone looking for a sophisticated dinner away from the typical beachside burger shack. It feels classic and polished, though keep in mind that the open-air design means you are at the mercy of the island breeze—bringing a light sweater is a pro-tip for the cooler Lihue evenings. Parking is plentiful since you are pulling into the expansive plantation grounds, which makes arrival stress-free compared to the tight spots often found in town.

Dining here is about slowing down. It is not a place for a quick bite; it is for those who want to linger over a glass of wine while the sunset casts a golden glow over the historic manor. Whether you are a local resident or a visitor exploring the Garden Isle, the architecture and the service provide a distinct slice of Kauai history.

Beautiful setting for luau. We got premium package that included dinner at the restaurant, since we don’t eat pork, plus you don’t stand in a long line for food. It was fantastic experience

Lelo was a great server! Great service and good food. I just wish they still offered bread service with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

What a gorgeous place to stop and explore while getting a bite to eat. We had the perfect timing to watch the sunny drizzle in patio seating. What a fantastic waitress (sadly don’t recall her name). The food was good, wasn’t allergen friendly for us but we managed. Even enjoyed the sweetest kitty friend. Their version of an adult cold brew was exceptional!

We had a rather disappointing dinner at The Plantation House. I ordered the Shrimp Puttanesca which is described as "Shrimp sauteed with portabella mushroom, basil, capers, garlic, olives, anchovy tossed in Pomodoro capellini pasta served with garlic bread." When it came out, the pasta was thick linguine instead of thin capellini. We asked about it and they said that the chef swapped it because the capellini was too mushy. If your pasta is mushy, you overcooked it. The sauce was very sweet, like Campbell's tomato soup, and I didn't see or taste the capers or anchovies in the sauce. The shrimp was also overcooked and tough, which I would have honestly forgiven if the sauce was better. Overall, just a big bummer for one of our last meals of our trip!

Absolutely lovely experience. We had the signature Oscar dish and the seafood stew, both were delicious. Thank you to our service Jeff and Colby. Loved the plantation atmosphere. 2 thumbs up!

Although we had come to the Plantation grounds a couple times for Koloa rum tasting, we never tried the restaurant. I'm so glad we finally did. The service was amazing - I'm not sure how much water I drank because the glass was filled almost as quickly as I put it down. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and everything was delicious. Our waitress talked up the Brie pupu so much we had to try it for our dessert. It really was amazing and the perfect ending to our beautiful meal.

Absolutely delicious. Watch the time, they stop seating at 2:15. We barely made it in and wow I’m glad we did. A local friend recommended it and we’re so grateful she did. We got the catch of the day, shrimp scampi and meatloaf. Absolutely tasty. The sauce on the catch of the day was insane, I will dream of that sauce the rest of my life. Cooked to perfection. The location is incredible and it is so gorgeous and serene. Our waiter and other staff were terrific! We are sooooo glad we came and were coming back!

We had lunch and it was fabulous! The service was great and very quick. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was amazing. My husband had the catch of the day, which he said delicious. I highly recommend the lava cake for dessert as well as the banana pudding which is made from Hawaiian sweet bread. We also had a beautiful view from our table.

We chose the "Manor House Experience" which consisted of pre-set menu served at the Plantation House, followed by being escorted to watch the Kalamaku Luau right next door. As many had raved about the food at the Plantation House, we had our hopes up for an evening of delicious cuisine... Before dinner, we had some time to meander around the property and did some shopping upstairs in the house where there were multiple small artisans selling their crafts and artwork. For the dinner, we were seated outside on the patio which hosted a nice, quiet ambience. For each course, we had two items to select from. I chose jumbo shrimp appetizer, island caprese salad, main entree of Island fresh catch fish with Kahlua, and profiteroles to finish. The main entree was rather disappointing; dry and over-salted fish served next to rather flavorless Kahlua pork (I had better pork at L&L which is saying a lot!!). The best course was the caprese salad, as ironic as that is as there is nothing "Hawaiian" about mozzarella or balsamic dressing. After dinner, we were escorted to watch the Kalamaku Luau and were seated right in the front of the stage. The show itself was well done with a creative storyline and a great cast of talented singers, dancers, and firedancers. Our package also came with open bar. I've lived in Hawaii for a short term, in addition to numerous vacation trips to all of their islands. We've been to variety of luaus ranging from small intimate ones with deliciously curated selection of food which were served table-side, to large touristy luaus where buses full of tourists were brought in to dine on lack luster food produced in massive quantities and served buffet style. I had high hopes for the luau dinner here at the Plantation House given its reputation, but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. Perhaps their regular restaurant serves far better food with better creativity, so we shall return to give that a chance. But, I would pass on the extra cost of paying for the "Manor House Experience" and just go enjoy the regular luau separately.

Really great atmosphere and beautiful farm to table food. We did the rum tour and that was a 15 out of 10. So fun, beautiful, and educational. The food was great and a lot of it is grown on the property.
