South East Asia Kauai
About
A Taste of Vietnam in the Heart of Lihue
Stepping into South East Asia on Kauai’s eastern shore, you are immediately greeted by the aromatic steam of star anise and cinnamon rising from bowls of steaming pho. This local favorite has become a staple for those navigating the bustling streets of Lihue, offering a straightforward, no-frills environment where the focus remains entirely on the depth of the broth and the crispness of the fresh herbs.
The Flavors of the Menu
The kitchen is celebrated for its traditional approach to Vietnamese staples. The signature pho features a clear, complex beef broth that has been simmered for hours, served alongside generous portions of bean sprouts, Thai basil, and lime. Beyond the noodle soups, regular patrons often gravitate toward the spring rolls, which are wrapped tightly with translucent rice paper and packed with vibrant, crunch-heavy vegetables and succulent shrimp. The bun thit nuong, topped with grilled pork and crushed peanuts, provides a balance of savory, sweet, and nutty notes that capture the essence of street-style dining in Southeast Asia.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
This spot thrives on a casual, relaxed atmosphere that feels like a home kitchen rather than a sterile commercial space. It is an ideal destination for a quick lunch break or a low-key dinner after a day of exploring the nearby tropical landscapes. While the space is compact and can get quite lively during the mid-day rush—resulting in a hum of conversation that fills the room—the efficiency of the service ensures you are never waiting long to dive into your meal. If you are exploring the island and craving a hearty, warming dish that strays from standard island fare, this corner of Lihue offers a consistent and satisfying culinary escape.

Such a friendly staff and an AMAZING meal!! We got the special tuna roll and it was truly incredible. Came back a second night & tried the beef noodle soup. It was so flavorful and was as good if not better than dishes we had while traveling through Thailand. Highly recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Exceptional Food & Even Better Service! We came to Alisa’s Japanese and Thai to celebrate a very special occasion—I just bought a new truck! Even though we arrived right as they were closing, the staff was incredibly welcoming. A huge Mahalo to our server, “O.” He was so patient, accommodating, and genuinely shared in our excitement. He truly went above and beyond by celebrating with us and even surprised us with a complimentary dessert to mark the occasion. The Food: Everything was a 10/10. Unagi Roll: Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Tuna Lover Special: My friend absolutely loved this; the quality of the fish was top-tier. Chocolate Lava Cake: This was the perfect finish to the night—decadent and delicious. The combination of authentic flavors and world-class service makes this a must-visit. We will definitely be returning with the entire family soon! Mahalo again, “O,” for making our celebration unforgettable!

Alisa's has fantastic food, friendly and courteous staff, and a great atmosphere. For appetizers we had the crab rangoon and the calamari. The calamari was delicious and the crab rangoons were some of the best I have had. We ordered, among other rolls, the Lobster roll. I can confidently say this roll is among my top 5 rolls I have ever had. The other rolls were delicious and well made. The Lychee Martini was delicious and the Pina Colada was a big hit with my husband. The staff was so kind and attentive. They all worked together to bring out our food, clear used plates, and check in with us throughout the meal. They all were so easy to talk to and fun to chat with. I would definitely prioritize coming back if I come back to Kauai.

Delicious! A must try in Kauai. My aunt got her favorite drink - a mojito and loved it. We shared gyoza & then she got spicy basil crispy pork belly and I got a crunchy volcano roll. Both to die for! You can tell it’s made with love. Also loved the staff and the story behind the restaurant. Our server O was very attentive, funny, and nice. Will add Alisa’s to my list of places I have to go every time I visit!

I wanted to like this place, but it's a bit difficult to do that when everything you attempt to order is unavailable and the service is about as warm as a cold plunge. When I realized food wasn't in the cards, I purchased one of the only beers they had left and called it a day. My friend across from me who decided to still give it a go confirmed the food was squarely below-mid. There are better options all over the island to be sure.

This place was incredible. Me and my husband loved every second of it. I love Thai food and he loves sushi so it was a perfect spot. We sat outside and watched the waves crashed as we enjoyed our meal. The server was so sweet and helpful.

Fresh delicious Thai food. There's not much on this island but we eat here every time we are on the island because this restaurant's quality rivals Thai restaurant in Thai Town California. Balance flavors, the spicy level is flexible, and everything is freshly made including the Thai ice tea. We've eaten most of the menu by now. Price is island pricing but they are generous with their portions. Outside seating are the best because you get the ocean and valley views and the island breeze is calming. The quality of sushi here is what I consider mid range. Not premium but not low. Overall, good pricing.

Exquisite!!!! I had Red Curry with no added protein and the Sizzling Lobster 🦞. Mister had the Pineapple Curry. All three dishes were well seasoned and flavorful! I would have loved the option to have a boiled lobster. I noticed other people’s children thoroughly enjoying their food. When the owner, Toom, visited our table and I was able to express my delight with her food. She was humble, very kind and super personable! The place is located on the top left corner from the parking lot. It’s bright yellow, you can’t miss it! This restaurant is a MUST come to, you won’t be disappointed!
