Shutters Lounge
About
Sip and Soak in the Pacific Breeze
Perched overlooking the gentle surf near Nawiliwili Harbor, Shutters Lounge serves as the go-to spot for travelers wrapping up a day on the Kauai coast. As you walk in, the immediate sensory hit is the salt-tinged breeze rolling off the water, punctuated by the rhythmic clinking of glass and low-frequency chatter of locals and tourists alike.
The Island Ritual
The menu highlights local favorites, with many guests gravitating toward the heavy-pour mai tais and signature pupus that define a proper Lihue happy hour. The space is distinctly open-air, embracing the island humidity rather than fighting it, which means you’ll want to dress comfortably for the tropical climate. It’s an informal environment where the dress code essentially mandates nothing more than a pair of clean slippers and a relaxed attitude.
A Few Things to Know
The lounge is undeniably popular when the sun starts its descent toward the horizon, making it a hotspot for those chasing golden hour hues. Be prepared for a lively, sometimes boisterous crowd during peak hours, as the energy builds when live music kicks in. While the parking lot can get tight as the night progresses, the view of the cruise ships docked in the harbor or the changing colors of the sky makes navigating the crowd worth the effort. Whether you are waiting for a table or just looking for a solid nightcap, Shutters provides an authentic, no-frills look at Kauai’s hospitality scene.

Staying at the resort and had the “catch of the day” and wife had the pork sliders. Both meals were very good. Read some iffy reviews but our eating experience was nothing but good.

Stayed at the resort for 5 nights and gave the restaurant/bar a chance. We never eat at resort restaurants because most time the food is mid (meh). We are foodies, but our expectations are reasonable. We were also drawn in by the live music and hula, which was amazing. Kudos to the performers. Ordered the spareribs in plum sauce at Shutters. It was NASTY. I think the sauce had turned since there was a heavy vinegar taste and the ribs had been cooked a while before and reheated. I ate one half of the 3 ribs. I ended up having some stomach issues the next morning and I’m confident it was from the ribs. The comical part was when the server came to clear the table and bring our check she clearly observed the remaining ribs and asked if I didn’t like them. I let her know that something was wrong with them. She replied with “you must not be a plum person” and charged us for the ribs in the end. This made me laugh and didn’t bother going into more detail with her. Along with this interaction and her lack of engagement throughout the dining area it was clear she was not meant to be in the industry and no conversation is going to fix that. It is sad to still see the impact COVID has left in service industries. Point is there are a ton of great restaurants in Princeville, Lihue, Wailua, and Poipu. Grab a drink at the bar to enjoy the live music, but go outside the resort for food.

Had some apps here the day my family and I arrived to the resort. First time having furikake fries and they were damn good. So was the the shrimp tempura. Server was friendly and they had a small band playing which was great.

Delicious food with friendly staff. Happy hour discounts on snacks and drinks make it a great alternative for dinner.

This bar is inside the resort with a view of the pools and live music. The drinks and appetizers are very reasonably priced during Happy Hour. Staff is very friendly, and one bartender politely pointed out I had ordered the strongest drink on the menu, which, as a petite lady, I do appreciate! It was delicious.

We had food at all three restaurants during our stay. The manager was so professional checking on us and watching the restaurant helping where needed! We enjoyed the live music, and our server was wonderful at Shutters. We had delicious drinks and desert

I dined at Shutters Lounge at Outrigger Kauai twice during my stay. The food was good overall, but the cheesecake stood out—easily 5 stars. It’s one of the most unique and possibly the best-tasting cheesecake I’ve ever had. Unfortunately, the service was below average. My first visit had poor service, while the second visit, a takeout experience, was just “mid.” Overall, I’d rate it 3 stars, but since that was one of the best if not the best cheesecake I have ever tried. I have decided on a 4 star rating.
