About
A Taste of Lihue’s Local Soul
Tucked away from the busy tourist corridors of Kauai, Po's Kitchen serves as a go-to spot for those seeking the unvarnished taste of island comfort food. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is where the steady hum of local conversation fills the room and the scent of slow-cooked proteins hits you the moment you step through the door. If you find yourself navigating the streets of Lihue, this is where you stop for a plate lunch that actually feels like a home-cooked meal.
Menu Staples and Island Flavors
The kitchen is best known for its mastery of traditional Hawaiian-style comfort food, with portions that lean toward the generous side. Regulars swear by their signature roast pork, which pulls apart with a fork, and the crispy-edged chicken katsu that maintains its crunch under a ladle of savory gravy. The menu respects the local palate, focusing on quality ingredients that hit that specific craving for salt, fat, and carbohydrates. Keep in mind that the space is compact and can get quite lively during the lunch rush, so you might be shoulder-to-shoulder with a local crew grabbing their midday fuel.
Why It Fits the Neighborhood
Po's Kitchen embodies the laid-back, utilitarian spirit of Lihue. It is perfectly suited for residents looking for a quick, reliable lunch or visitors who want to escape the resort scene to eat where the locals eat. While parking in this part of town can occasionally be a game of patience, the trade-off is a meal that feels authentic to Kauai’s culinary identity. Whether you are grabbing a takeout box to eat at a nearby beach park or finding a seat inside, you are getting the real deal—no frills, just consistently prepared food that satisfies the appetite.

Normally a balanced plate is 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbs. Here, it is exclusively refined carbs, fried fatty processed meat, Sugar sauce and more mayo-laden carbs. Came here because of the good reviews but ended up paying $14 (incl tips) for this heart attack and diabetes in a box, or what my partner calls bachelor food. Even if health were not a concern, food was warm and bland at best.

Based on majority of reviews I decided to order the Deluxe. Perhaps it was 1:30 pm, they close st 2:00 pm that resulted in the food being mediocre. The best thing on the plate was the shrimp. Everything else was cold snd dry. The chicken, beef were so dry - I could barely cut into pieces to eat - and didn’t. The other portions of egg roll (more like a slicer of omelet), long rice noodles , mash were ok. I was very disappointed and would not recommend.

Delicious and convenient and affordable. Try their neighbor Smiley's too! Oh and to the negative reviewer... this is Kauai... we need the carbs!

Not sure if I just got junk because it’s my first time or what.. Portion size was great. The food was not even room temp, everything seemed to be cooked the day before and just left the ice box. 2 slivers of pork in the pork hash. Food had zero seasoning

Fantastic bentos. Easy ordering at the window--being sure to check with the rest of the crowd as to who has ordered in a prior batch--and a delightful box comes out.

Quick service, food tastes good. Lower rating due to how carb heavy the food was. Ended up throwing out most of the rice.
